Batman & Robin traumatised the franchise (and, come to think of it, the entire super hero genre) to such an extent that Hollywood execs decided the next time they go anywhere NEAR this material they better do it dark, darker, and then some -- fast forward eight years later to Batman Begins, so every cloud has a silver lining.
