Yes, it is derivative, but the multiplayer is some of the best I've ever played in a video game. That's what makes New Super Mario Bros. Wii so much fun. The problem with it, though, is that because it's derived so much from the other mario games, there's not much of a reason to replay the single player, unless you are a huge Mario or 2d platforming fan. It's also a bit on the easy side. My advice is to grab three of your best friends, rent this game, and pull an all-nighter with it.
