Editing … I really don't think complex characters that have different traits at different times should be broken down into separate people. A character arc of corruption/redemption is still about the same character throughout, even if it changes them and I don't get how Vader/Skywalker's any different from the convict/Magwitch in Great Expectations, Theon Greyjoy or Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones, Harvey Dent/ Two Face and Jason Todd/Red Hood from Batman or Snape in Harry Potter in terms of them changing drastically as the story goes on. I'm with @Louis Bromilow about this, some characters appeal because they're complex, their motives vary and their character arc changes them and if you break them down into different people you're taking away from that.

Editing … To be honest, I'm torn on this one. I'd like to see them merged – Palpatine and the Imperator are one entry already and I absolutely agree with renegade's points on a complex character development *adding* to the character. But then again, the different actors' performances add to the messy situation. I mean, think about it: you'd merge Darth Vader with Anakin Skywalker. One is a frickin' awesome dark knight caped black-masked space samurai – and the other is a god-damn whino! Which, I don't know if can even comprehend if you've watched the sixtology IN NUMERICAL ORDER.

Editing … If you like original Skywalker/Vader but not the prequel version that's just down to poor storytelling/an unconvincing character arc rather than them being two different characters. I get why it's tempting to try and separate the two (personally I'd quite like an 'Indiana Jones except in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' option in the favourite characters list) but I don't think we should try and divide a character into the aspects/portrayals we like/don't like just so we can isolate the aspects/portrayals we do like.

Editing … Just looking at the Star Wars character list, don't you think that it's really revealing that 20 people ranked Vader and only 3 ranked Anakin? I mean just looking at that is sending a message to the creators of the series and show how the community feels about that character. I think it's pretty powerful stuff to be able to read that from a simple list.

Editing … I love Anakin, we see someone who was thrust into a conflict at a very young age, then has his mother killed and understandably upset (and people call him whiny because of it) has the potential to be the greatest Jedi ever and has a hard time accepting authority (which most people do at young ages especially with a lots of talent). Then gets manipulated into turning to the darkside because he didn't want to lose the love of his life. He's one of the most well rounded characters ever. Yes Hadens acting in the second movie was bad but he knock it out of the park with third movie imo. But i guess haters gonna hate :D

Editing … On the merging and separating issue i'm leaning towards Renegade. I don't have that much to add because Rene basicly said everything already. I would just say to Papi's post that i have Anakin, Vader, Palpatine, Sidious all in my list but im thinking of dropping Anakin and Palpatine because it would free up two more spots. I think others might have done the same so its unfair to say that "only three people have ranked Anakin....." they might have but they want to save space for other characters.

I wish we could have line breaks in status comments and likes in forum posts, at the moment there's nowhere on the site where we have both (looks at @Pape Badiane). Editing … @Pape I don't think it's a strong enough argument that you can express to the creators which version/portrayal of a character you liked. There've been six James Bonds (just in film), we're onto the 12th Doctor Who, I've lost count of versions of a lot of comic characters like Batman and god knows how many versions of characters like Sherlock Holmes and Robin Hood there've been. Even portrayals by the same actor vary in popularity a lot, like Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones in Crystal Skull compared to his Indy in the 80s trilogy. The lists'd just end up a mess with fanbases scattered between various versions of a character if you divide them rather than have people rank them as a whole. It'd reward simple/consistent/new characters and punish complex/long running ones.

Editing … I think there's a similar question with versions of songs. My general approach has been that if a particular artist has two versions of the same song with the same basic name, then that's one page. For example, the live version of Fleetwood Mac's Silver Springs is one of my favorite songs, but I just made a page for Silver Springs in general and ranked that. I've also seen different versions of songs on video game soundtracks each given individual pages. I can see the case for both, where you might want to specify which version you like or say you like the piano version as well as the orchestral version or whatever, but on the other hand where do you draw the line, and what if a song ends up getting a dozen or more pages because the artist has a bunch of different live albums? So I don't really know.
