This is actually the R.E.M. song that I like the most, because it has almost no distinct hooks. Honestly, I wouldn't have minded if R.E.M. stuck with distorted ambient-ish rock with rambling, meaningless lyrics that anyone can play in the background at work.

They obviously didn't move much further in that direction and they never worked with Patti Smith again. But hey, New Adventures in Hi-Fi is still so badass. It was fun while it lasted...
