Any reason why I shouldn't buy Iz this for Christmas? https://www.currys.co.uk/products/samsung-galaxy-tab-s9-fe-10.9-tablet-128-gb-light-green-10256790.html

It's water and dust resistant, got loads of stirage and ram. It looks like a good compromise between power and price to me but everything I know about tablets was done in a 15 minute search this morning.

Editing … The only reason I can think of to not give her that is not to stimulate sceen addiction. To have a personal tablet at such an age for me would have probably meant me never leaving my room at all ever. (but taking into account how many screens you have lying around the house already it probably will not make much of a difference.) But it's also quite an adult gift no? it's not a toy like thing, it's just a slippery rectangle. You sure you're not just getting that for yourself secretly? I think at that age I would have just wanted more designer barbie clothes or something to that extent. More barbies always = better.

Editing … Yeah, it's creepy but logical. It is a true addiction and making a child addicted is worst of all because they have 0 controll. You can't just leave nature to do it's thing because nature will hook your kids on the hard stuff for life. I think If I ever have kids I will be a screen nazi. Maybe if they want to watch something all they can watch is a vhs tape. That will teach them. They will have to put in the tape and stuff and before they get it to work they will be bored and go do something else.

Editing … I think it's the worst when kids learn they can cast away their boredom and regulate their emotions with screens. Then they will have a diminished ability to have fun by themselves and sit through difficult emotions. Something adults also use screens for so why expect a child to do better? It's not "kids these days" it's "people these days " because everyone is affected by it to a greater or lesser extent. The most addicted people I know, don't think they have a problem at all. But every 20 seconds they interupt what they are doing to look at their phone. That's even worse than binging netflix all day imo. They are pavlov's dog reincarnated. If you can't have uninterupted thoughts for 20 seconds you cannot form complete thoughts and it shows. As long as a kid knows they need clear boundaries for screens it is fine I think but parents really need to be nazis about it. Uniform and all.

Editing … I spent my childhood playing atari, sega, commodore etc for hours a day but I turned out fine. All of us here spent hours playing games in front of a screen. I don't think screen time is the problem I think it's more to do with modern society.

Editing … Atari games were only so fun, but media now is engeneered to hold the attention. I played games and watched tv unrestricted after the age of 6 or 7 and internet after the age of 12 or so. It was much more engaging than an atari game and it was also not good for me. When I was yonger I would quit tv after about 3 or 4 hours only because the fun programs would be over but when I came online I could find endless entertainment and increasingly so as the internet became better. In games after a while you get stuck or you've had your fill and you quit and you only have so many games to play, but streaming and the internet are antierly different beast. I think you underestimate it. By the time I was a teen I was only in my room being online. I wanted to quit so I could do other things but I could not get myself to quit. Nobody came to give me boundaries because it was probably very nice to have your child be quiet in their room. I was able to quit only at the age of 18. I would have masivly been better off if someone would have taught me about ballance because I didn't have none. But now when I look at regular people why would never have been online back in they day, I see them and reallise they are far more addicted then I ever was which creeps me out. And they are addicted to the most boring things of all: endless scrolling. I think that here is the key: Endless content. Ofcourse society and the parents play a major role in this but if there was no internet even with bad parenting you would not get the problems kids have to deal with now.

Editing … A lot of games require imagination like rollercoaster tycoon and the sims. Games that require goal setting by the player always make me think more creatively. Also learning how a new game works requires problem solving. But it's not like you need games to do those things ofcourse. Playing with blocks does the same probably.

Editing … https://www.amazon.com/AMT-Scale-Shelby-GT-350-Model/dp/B00B9DVYS4/ I built the crap out of these sorts of model kits back in the day. Funny though how I barely remember them compared to videogames, they're a footnote of my childhood at best. So I think videogames are better. And Lego kits probably accomplish the same thing. P.S. Funny story, I once visited a friend's house and was surprised to see that he did a model kit but didn't paint it at all. Maybe they were poor and couldn't afford paint, lol. But then again, what's wrong with not painting it. It has nothing to do with actually assembling the car, and doesn't really use your brain, it's just something to make it look nicer.

Editing … To teach kids hand eye coordination I would not think to give them a shooter. I think I would kick them outside and let them play some sport. But I really do think I picked up some abstract spatial reasoning from playing 3d games. (like rotating objects in my mind and solving spatial puzzles). But playing with boring things is important too. It lowers your dopamine threashold which makes you a well ajusted person. Wouldn't you be the most happy person if even watching grass grow was fun to you as opposed to you can only feel a little bit of stimulation if you watch a movie while you also scroll tiktok and munch cheetos at the same time? I vividly remember having fun drawing and crafting. But that is only engaging because you make it fun with your own mind. Things like that are great pastimes. Next to videogames and playing outside that was the most fun if I think back but drawing and crafting are more akin to playing outside than videogames because most videogames inherently reward you while drawing does not.

Editing … To be honest, I'd love to go out and play football with some friends rather than spend my free time playing games or going to pub. But no adults want to play football anymore. The health freaks go to a gym and everybody else watches tv or goes in pub. I know it's hard to find time after work, and I'm 45 in a few weeks, all my friends have grandchildren to look after too.

Editing … Yes this! For years I've wanted to build a hut and make a little pretend civilisation in the woods but I can think of noone who would be excited to do that or take it seriousley. I would love to do random active stuff with people but everyone just wants to do the things they always do eventhough they have the time to do new things. People become very conservative in their pastimes as they age. The enthousiasm to do something new just isn't there. In the end I also end up doing the same things because because nobody wants to play with me. Maybe you could become a volenteer football coach then you could do football things with people who are excited to play football.
