    I have a crazy idea:

What if... I replaced my Android phone with a Windows tablet?
A Windows tablet that is almost as portable as a phone, such as this one for example:

The only problem I have would be the missing 4G module / modem. There ARE Windows tablets out there with 4G functionality and SIM card slots, but they are usually larger. Does anyone know if there's a device in that size featuring a SIM card slot and 4G? Or: is there a super small 4G stick or add-on that I can use to add that functionality?

Editing … It's only a little larger than my current phone, a DOOGEE X5S. However, it undeniably *is* a lot thicker. That can't be helped as it features several ports that you will find on a Desktop PC.

Editing … I can't customize Android the way I want to. With Windows, I have tools on my hand to customize the Windows installation (e.g. slipstreaming all updates, removing all the bloatware etc.) which I can't on Android. Also, I can install any software I want, just like I would on a desktop PC. I know it's probably irrational, but I just don't like Android. Websites are becoming increasingly laggy on my 7 year old phone, so I want to replace it.

Editing … Just buy a new Android, they are so much better than they were 7 years ago. You can remove all kinds of stuff, I did it a couple years ago after googling it when I broke 4 phones in a month and had to use a 2nd hand piece of shit for a while. Things have moved on a lot in the last couple of years.

Editing … I'd be worried about the performance on an Aliexpress Windows tablet. You might have better luck messing with a custom Android blend like LineageOS. But mobile operating systems suck so maybe the tablet's worth it. I think I'd have trust issues with a Windows tablet that doesn't come from a major manufacturer though. I once had a Chuwi tablet with dual boot Win10/Android, was able to open it up to remove the cameras and microphone, that was nice. Ran like shit though.

Editing … I'd be mostly using it just for surfing (via Firefox) and maybe sometimes playing a SNES game or something. And phoning and writing text messages, of course. I am not *that* worried about the performance. The missing 4G is the problem here...

Editing … OH maybe if you wanted optimal performance, and an OS that's made to guarantee freedom, you could try searching for Linux distros with decent touchscreen interfaces. Could install it on the Windows tablet probably. Is it ARM or x86? Aliexpress has been stuck in a redirect loop for me for like two years, keeps trying to redirect me to a .us site and then back to the .com.

Editing … I inserted my SIM card into my Panasonic Toughpad today and was easily able to establish a 4G Internet connection. Thanks to Sierra Skylight I was also able to send myself an SMS. But sadly that software doesn't have phone call functionality. So I tried Windows dialer but that also didn't work as it didn't recognize any modems (or I just failed to set it up correctly, I don't know...). They really made sure that phoning and texting in the most traditional way on a Windows device is nigh impossible and I hate that. Sure, I could link my phone to my Windows device, but that's boring and I'd need to carry two devices. Man, that sux! Maybe I should go back to my small Nokia for phoning / texting and use a separate SIM card and a mini Windows tablet for surfing the Internet. Maybe I should try cloning my SIM card so that I wouldn't need two mobile tariffs.

Editing … I have bought that 5.5 inch Windows 11 tablet on Aliexpress. According to reviews, it comes with a virus, unfinished BIOS and it apparently gets hot as fuck. But I am confident that I can solve all these problems when it arrives. Wish me luck!

Editing … It arrived and I just successfully installed Windows 10, without having to go through with Windows 11 (I can still choose to continue the Windows 11 setup though on boot). I "stole" the drivers from the Windows 11 installation, but four devices remain "unknown". So far I am absolutely pleased with the tablet! It works surprisingly well given the "low" resolution and smol screen!!
