I'm thinking of getting a microwave. But I haven't owned one before and I have a question. How are you meant to open the microwave door on models that don't have a door handle?

Editing … And it's funny you say that. I talked to my sister recently about getting a microwave, she considers it a fringe appliance that you use once or twice and it collects dust. She also said that my dad rarely even uses the microwave he bought. (But then again, I was told he keeps the microwave under the counter when not in use. That would explain why he doesn't use it, imo.)

Editing … Fun fact: a online friend from Austria also doesn't own a microwave. When I heard that, I had a similar reaction as Nodley: "WTF, you don't have a microwave?! HOW DO YOU EVEN LIVE?!" When I asked him how he reheats stuff, he said that he does it on the stove.

Editing … Do new microwaves create a weird smell or fumes when you first use it? It's an issue I noticed with some electronic appliances. Space heaters, egg cookers, portable stoves, etc. The manual will sometime mention that the thing you just bought will smell the first few times you use it. Toasters seem to produce a smell no matter old they are. Toaster smell is not as bad imo, but that may be because our toasters were bought years ago so the smell was depleted from use.

Editing … I officially have a microwave. Now I just gotta learn how to use it. So far I've only used to reheat some leftover cornbread. (It was good!) Anyway, it didn't come with any instructions, so I'm still figuring out the buttons. I don't even know how to set the clock. What's interesting is that the oven is unbranded, although the inside of the door says you can go to amazon.com/cookpresets to view the full list of Alexa commands, but that page is just a 404. (Weak!!)

Editing … I tried microwaving a piece of apple cake crust and it literally burned a hole through the container. There was smoke coming out of the microwave. Had to clean the inside. It's a miracle no smoke detectors went off. I'm honestly not even sure what I did wrong and why the same thing didn't happen to the cornbread from earlier. I'm guessing it has something to do with moisture. If there's no moisture or water in the food or around the food then it will burn. P.S. aside from this one incident, the microwave is awesome!! I didn't say anything tho bc I didn't want to bore you guys. Only posting now since I nearly burned down my house, which I figure was interesting enough to share, somewhat.

Editing … No foil of course. in high school someone nearly started a fire when they put foil along with their food in cafeteria microwave. So although I didn't own a microwave back then, I learned never to do that. Now as for my incident, I think maybe it happened because it was a high cooking time (maybe 60 seconds) for such a small portion of food. It was practically just a piece of crust bc I wanted to gauge how much microwaving time would be needed to heat the other pieces of cake. And maybe this seems obvious but I've only lately got the impression that the more food I put in microwave the more cooking time is needed to achieve the same level of hotness as a smaller portion. So that's why I think portion size may be the culprit. Come to think of it, this would mean that small portion sizes in general are dangerous. How delightfully counter intuitive. This means that every time I was putting in a small amount to "test the waters" I was actually swimming with the sharks.

Editing … I tried to poach an egg and it exploded. I did like the yt videos said, pour water in a glass, pour egg in, microwave for 60 seconds. Did a loud *POP* the exact moment I opened the microwave door. The good news is that I was not scalded, and the glass containing the egg didn't break (which I thought the explosion was at first, only after seeing it didn't break did I realize the water must have superheated) and very little of the mess got outside the microwave. However the inside of the microwave was basically covered in omellete and was a pain in the ass to clean. Sigh. Only telling you guys this just in case any of y'all decide to try poaching an egg in the microwave, so you know to be extra cautious! Don't end up like me!
