Editing … Small businesses just don't make enough to give everybody a free day off every week, you have to expect some compromise. 4x10 hour days is much better than 5x8 hour days imo. I just get 4 days pay, I don't get anything extra.

Editing … It seems better to me too but isn't the theory that people acomplish just as much in 4 days when they feel more fresh? For store clerks it's different ofcourse because you need someone to be at the store. You don't care how they feel then you just want them to be there. but if a programmer dude can do the work in a shorter ammount of time I'd say he can have an extra day off. No need to just hang around for no reason.

Editing … I think they mean people on salary when they say that. I can't drive extra miles over 4 days it's just not possible, and like you said places need to be open to make money. But salary guys get the same, so if they can be more productive with a day off then great.

I'd rather be out alone seeing a differeng view everyday and lose 20% wages. I worked in that office before and lasted 2 weeks I hated it. No money is worth that job.

Editing … I mean the hourly wage came about to give stability to the working class but now with technology we've become so efficient that 40 hours isn't really necessary for most jobs now. I think that's why we're seeing a rise in the gig economy. Corporations are realizing they don't need workers for 40 hours, they can just pay somebody for services rendered. Which is kind of like what it used to be. But I feel like a lot of the people in my generation don't see a job as getting paid for work rendered... They just go and expect to be paid for their time regardless if they do the job while they are at the building. It's odd to me.

Editing … Some jobs are of course time dependant but being paid for the actual work and quality delivered seems much more meaningful (in an ideal world without abuse of power by the employer). Then if you become really good at a job you actually benefit in time and finish early and the client also gets what they want faster. It’s a win for both sides. In a way being paid by the hour does not reward the workers own ingenuity. There your increase in reward (pay or time) is entirely dependent on the employer. If you are being paid by the hour just sitting out your time and taking it easy seems like the best option if you don’t have your sight set on a raise or promotion. You simply won’t immediately be rewarded more for doing a better job.

Editing … Yea 100% Like I come from managing inventory for an apparel company where I did pretty much everything in the warehouse to now working as a grunt for Amazon. I can clearly see a lot of what can be done during my downtime at work but I've reserved myself to just complete the job I was given well and then chill the rest of the time. There's no reason to go above and beyond in this role. But I at least have a work ethic that I make sure I do my job to the best of my ability and then when it's complete that's when I chill. But from what I see a lot of folks around the same age in my building avoid the work at hand to dick around on their phones or whatever. From my experience all the roles in the building have ebbs and flows, if you just work at a steady, manageable pace there are always times where there's nothing left to do and you can chill. But instead they'll avoid even the minimum of work and then complain that there's always work on the line...it's baffling to me.

Editing … I like the idea of that Kev. I should get a price to deliver something, and if I smash it then go home I still get the same as the lazy fuckers who take 17 smoke breaks and stand around talking all day. I'd much prefer that to an hourly wage. I get a day rate for 10 hours, if I finish in 4 hours I still get 10 hours pay still, and I regularly beat it by hours. If I go over 10 hours I get overtime rate per hour. So most drivers drag their feet and do 15 hours for maximum money but I do the same job in 8 and get paid a LOT less.
