This album deserved far more recognition for the sheer amount of instrumentation and moody themes of sorrow and depression. Sure, The National explored these ideas in their previous albums, but High Violet mashed them in an intoxicating mix of distortion loops, funky vocal patterns and the most intense drumming ever.

I've always loved Matt Berninger's charming bass vocals, but the band always needed some cohesion with their instrumentation. "Bloodbuzz Ohio" was the single that pushed their limits with a killer drum beat, trumpets and long, echoing guitar reverb. I dunno how they balanced all their sound for that song, but it all sounds so epic whenever I hear it.
