As a connoisseur of puzzle games, I can say that this ranks among some of the absolute best. It's the ultimate collection of Mr. Driller and driller mini-games. The soundtrack is full of cute bangers. And there's even a hardcore rogue-like mode called the Hole of Druaga where the player has to navigate a map to find the key, warp to the final door and defeat Druaga.

I would complain that this whole game is way too hard for anyone to handle, but the awesome music and the beautiful cartoon graphics make everything far more soothing and bearable. I mean, Namco even added Taizo Hori, the original character from Dig Dug. That should give everyone a sense of the scope of this massive Mr. Driller collection and the content available.

There's also a story to this game, if anyone beats every single game variation. I recommend playing through all the game types before trying to take on the ordinary World Tour or Star Driller. To be honest, these variations are the best parts of the collection.
    8.5/10

Editing … I was disappointed in the story. For some reason going in I assumed this was going to be a full Mr. Driller epic. It's more substantial than the other games, sure, but not by much, and the other games actually have more charm imo. I was wondering why the villains are barely used in the other games and now I see why. They're completely forgettable and a little annoying. The series should just focus on the driller family & friends and the Undergrounders. The idea that there are no antagonists and that all the mayhem is simply caused by the Undergrounder's ineptitude is MUCH more hilarious.

Editing … Yeah, this game has its share of flaws. All the controls are probably better on any other system. I mean, the controls are floaty as all hell. I gave up trying to get past 1000 meters on the World Tour mode, because something doesn't feel right. This version wasn't made for arcade preciseness.

Editing … The story is also a joke. I wanted more Dig Dug lore, just because the characters seem like total drill nerds. On the other hand, it's only as deep as it needs to be, I guess. I mean, the controls kinda suck ass. So as long as everything's short, I won't feel like I missed out on anything. F***in' joycons.

Editing … Really? The controls seemed o.k. to me. The Lite's dpad is quite good for this sort of thing. But then again I did give up on the game after beating the main story and it's my second least favorite game in the series, barring JP only games and iphone ports. Maybe the controls were subliminally a factor.

Editing … Maybe I was in a bad mood. After eating breakfast, I nailed a 1000 ft (meters, whatever) run. I mean, I had to use the extra lives and super air bubble items, but I did it. I mean, I didn't enjoy all the blood, sweat and tears in the process, but I did it (shudder).

Editing … But yeah, the whole game is generally lacking something. And god, I couldn't bear playing this on a Gamecube controller.

Editing … I never use items. It feels like cheat codes. Although I wonder if they were intended and that's why the game seems pretty hard. I think it's hard for me to be convinced to use them since it tracks your score like an arcade game. If it were purely something like an rpg where the items were like equipment or character upgrades, maybe then their inclusion would feel more organic to me and I'd be more persuaded to use them. Another way is if the stages were literally impossible otherwise. (E.g. a stage w long stretches without air capsules, so you need to equip something that slows down the rate you lose air) Driller meets metroidvania, lol.

Editing … I honestly feel like the game was designed to force people to use items. A lot of the obstacle block patterns are really brutal near the end. I'll solve them, but freaking Susumu needs to learn to hold his f***ing breath. Lol.

Editing … 8.5 sounds like a decent enough score for this. It could've been great, but it just doesn't have that fresh, edgy feel of the original. Either that, or I got spoiled by the old Playstation/DS games.
