Would be interested to know what the Deaf community thinks about ASV. I read the manga a while back and to me, as a non-Deaf disabled person, it left a bad taste in my mouth. imo, the whole story is focused on a guy who was an ableist and abusive little shithead as a kid now seeking to show everyone that he's no longer an ableist and abusive little shithead he won't be exiled by his peers anymore. I would have to reread it to explain in more detail why it gave me this impression, but yeah. Allyship should not be centered on the privileged person's feelings and conscience.

Editing … I haven't read this but I had the same impression of it. It's really up to whether all teh feels is enough to help me look past that.

Editing … Shouya was called out on this issue specifically by multiple characters, it's why Yuzuru shut him down when he first tried to see her, and then he proved he was willing to do the actual work. The manga had the support of the Japanese Federation of the Deaf if that means anything to you.

Editing … I just remember being really dissatisfied with the ending because I still didn't get the impression that the main character truly cared about being an ally for the right reasons (i.e. selfless, and purely because it's the right thing to do) at the end of the series. He was still doing/saying things that made me think "has this guy learned anything other than ASL and the bare minimum standards of not being scum of the earth by not abusing disabled people?" That's good that Japanese Federation of the Deaf approves though

Editing … 1) (minor thing) They're using Japanese Sign Language (JSL), not American Sign Language (ASL).

Editing … 2) Various (American) Deaf people I follow on Twitter (I'm learning ASL) liked it, though agreed it wasn't perfect
