There is A LOT of dialogue in this game, which I guess is pretty standard for the genre but damn it almost rivals Kojima. However, the constant progression and battle system are keeping me engaged. I love the Persona-like feel of this game. It always feels like you are improving and progressing no matter what you choose to do. Sign of a good rpg in my mind.

Editing … I'm a fan, but it is a bit slow. I'm purely in it for the turn-based battle system and the drip-feed style of progression. The battles are essentially rock-paper-scissors, and reminds me a lot of Final Fantasy X. You learn some new skill or level up something after almost every battle, so it feels like you are constantly moving forward.

Editing … If the battles are slow paced or take too long then that makes grinding less fun. It should be fun to grind and level up your characters. I'm also hoping I get to customize my game in some way, even if it's simply who gets to be in my party or what their role in battle is. If the game is on-rails, i.e. my playthrough is going to be identical to everyone else's, that's going to be a bit of a downer. Examples of RPGs that I'm looking for: Pokemon on Switch, Final Fantasy Tactics, FF6 on SNES or FF4 on GBA minus the random battles.

Editing … The battles are fairly swift, although it's really just a case of choosing the attack that will give you the biggest combo. (Characters will carry out support attacks for additional damage). There's not a huge amount of customization that I have witnessed (about 20hrs in). You can choose party members eventually, but there is a very small cast, so not much to choose from. It seems like choosing which abilities to equip might become a thing at some point, but I haven't had to make any hard decisions. I dislike putting people off things they want to try, but given the games you have mentioned, I don't think this will provide the experience you are looking for. It's definitely a very linear experience both in terms of exploration and character development ( à la FFX).

Editing … Maybe that's fine, my RPG Maker game is linear and so is FF4 and many parts of FF6. What I like about it is that the battle screen looks polished. On the other hand 39.99 is still a lot and I'm not keen on the real world high schooler aspect that seems to be present in every SMT title, on top of that the protagonist seems kind of bland. Also, I have yet to like a single RPG that lets you chain attacks with your other party members. (although that may be because I like few RPGs in general) More often that not it seems to overcomplicate things and leaves me feeling detached from the gameplay.

Editing … The strategy in battle never gets more complex than choosing the attack which hits the enemy weakness. Which is signposted. So basically choose the attack the game tells you to. Oh, and the protagonist is definitely bland. There's also all the generic tropes present for the supporting cast: guy who wants to be a "hero", clueless love interest, pervy older woman, annoyingly high-pitched child.
