This show has an irreverent, classic 80s charm, but there's a whole lot of other weird, outdated film techniques from that era. There's goofy aliens and that strange live action storybook in the opening credits. And then there's all that stilted animation. Macross is still a timeless masterpiece, but it also has that tongue-in-cheek humor that characterized the decade. I dunno why, but 80s anime is just so...funny.
