Unlike the movie, the Patlabor TV show focuses more on the individual characters. The hotshot pilot Noa Izumi plays a much bigger role as the cute girl with a heart of gold and a knack for giant robot combat. The show still follows some philosophical themes, but the story clearly was meant for tons of cheesy 80s cop humor and cartoon mischief. It's full of bubbly entertainment. Just don't expect the police chief to make some uber-deep runimation about the motives for extreme robot terrorism or something.
