Don't let the black and white pixel graphics fool you, not everything in this game is simple - the interlocking labyrinth level design is something of a marvel. In classic metroidvania fashion, Hero Core has the player travelling around a non-linear complex, collecting new items to forward their progression. It's simple in this respect, but once you're about an hour into the game, the number of options available is impressive - at one point I had four separate boss fights to approach in any order. These boss battles are the one of the game's strongpoints, with Guardian and Star Splitter being the two most difficult, yet most enjoyable fights in the game. The biggest flaw is the exponential difficulty curve, but it's still a great game.
