Editing … I saw not a single one of those, except maybe Bourne Supremacy on TV while my mom was watching it. It was a Bourne film, dunno which one. But fuck it, I saw Zootopia, Superman Returns, and Secret of the NIMH. I can die happy.

Editing … I've seen 15, so I guess I win. That list is truly terrible, though. Avengers, really? Bourne Supremacy? Out of that list I would include maybe 19 of those films on my own (made up of several films I haven't seen and a few I have). Hannah and Her Sisters and Raising Arizona are both great and I love them dearly but if we're going by filmagrophies Annie Hall, Manhattan, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and No Country for Old Men are all more important films. The Apartment is rightfully a classic but not necessarily must-see. All the staples like Kane, Lawrence, Tokyo Story, Bicycle Thieves, Casablanca, A Trip to the Moon, The General etc. are must sees that I can agree with. How they didn't include Godfather I or II is insane, though. The Shining isn't Kubrick's best film but probably still deserves to be on the list for the production design and acting; the list needs more Kubrick, Hitchcock, and Kurosawa though.

Editing … Now I'm tempted to make my own must-see list but I'm not sure how I feel about adding films I haven't seen myself yet even though that includss a lot of clearly deserving ones like Lawrence and Casablanca. Then there's a lot of world cinema I could know more about. Aside from some French, Italian, Spanish, German, Japanese, and Mexican directors and a few other scattered great works I don't know as much as I could and could for sure overlook something not well-known but clearly a masterpiece that should be essential viewing. Panther Panchali and other mid-century Indian cinema comes to mind.

Editing … Top 5 essential movies that anyone interested in cinema must see is probably along the lines of: Citizen Kane, 2001, Psycho, Seven Samurai, The Godfather. You can probably make a pretty strong argument for The Wizard of Oz, Star Wars/A New Hope, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and Toy Story too, and one of Chaplin's works like City Lights or The Gold Rush to round out the top 10. And then there's Lawrence of Arabia...

Editing … Note I myself haven't seen Psycho, Good, Bad and Ugly, either Chaplin work, or Lawrence of Arabia yet... I own The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Lawrence of Arabia but I kind of want to catch them both on the big screen first, you know? I managed that with 2001 and it was super worth it.

Editing … Well we can agree to disagree on that. They're both phenomenal films, but I personally prefer No Country for Old Men. But the point was more about more worthy Coen Brothers (and Woody Allen) films than the ones on the list.

Editing … If I were to pick a Coen Brothers work in my personal idea of film canon/essential movies (and I'm not sure I would include one at all depending on some things) I would probably be inclined to go with Fargo even though I personally like several of their other movies better.

Editing … Did I ever tell you guys the story of that? I was 16, I'd just left school and one night I left my TV on and it woke me up when this film was starting. It was some shitty ancient black and white garbage they put on in the middle of the night for old people that pissed the bed so they can reminisce and shit. Anyway, I couldn't be arsed to look for the remote so I watched a few minutes. Then I watched a few minutes more! By the middle of the film I was sat bolt upright watching this shitty ancient black and white garbage at 3am wide awake. I couldn't tear my eyes away! That was 24 years ago and I still remember that night, that film really made an impression.

Editing … It's truly one of the greatest masterpieces of the history of cinema. Everything about it is perfect, from the casting and acting, to the writing, dialogue, pacing, music and sound, production design, and of course the battle choreography which was pretty revolutionary for the time and hugely influential. It evokes universal themes of camaraderie, duty, and sacrifice, And sometimes it's funny! A perfect film.

Editing … Citizen Kane isn't quite one of my favorite films but it is an obviously fantastic movie in its own right. It's a character study wrapped in the framing device of a mystery that keeps you interested all the way through. Welles is dynamic and compelling as Kane, making you root for him and then feel pity and disgust as time goes by. Of course as a film of historical significance it's incredibly important; Welles and his D.P. Gregg Toland invented different shots and cinematographic techniques from whole cloth, innovating in huge ways that are still influential today. The writing is snappy. It's really not a boring film at all. Welles is a great director and he knew what he was doing.

Editing … Yeah but see even if you know the famous spoiler that doesn't make it less compelling because it's a great ride. That's my point. And that's what great cinema is all about, pulling you in and enrapturing you with a great short-form tale.

Editing … It's good. I stopped watching it mostly because it's one of those films that either people know or they don't know. And all the film students get a little tired of hearing about it, because it's one of those movies that everyone "has" to watch. I like the cinematography and the framing. It's just...it's not my favorite anymore. Lol.

Editing … It's not my favorite either. I think I have it ranked like 60 or something. I have it at a solid 9.0 though. It's a great film, and it's historically significant. We don't have to gush about it all the time. I do think it's one of the most important and therefore "essential" movies, though.
