Saved!Whenever I say that I intend to play the FF games in numbered order, I get plenty of warnings that the older ones are grindy, dated, and generally irritating to play. Well, maybe it's because I'm playing the Origins Collection, but I'm really loving FF1 so far.
A bit worried about wandering too far from my ship... :p-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Love that box art
-
Saved!HelendlocEditing … The first Final Fantasy is still decent, it's 2 and 3 that have held up pretty badly
-
Saved!Silent GamerEditing … Final Fantasy I is one of my favourites :) It's a great game.
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … well, I'll be playing 2 via Origins as well. Not sure which system I'll be playing 3 onwards on. There's plenty of PC, DS, PSP, GBA, PS1 releases with different visuals and content, idk which are best in each case.
-
Saved!HelendlocEditing … I've only played 3 on DS and I really really wasn't a fan, but I don't think platform would make too much of a difference with it. By the way though I'd definitely recommend Anthology for 4 and 5 and the PS1 rerelease of 6, very close to the originals with minimal changes, just a couple cutscenes added in the PS1 versions and that's it afaik.
-
Saved!Sha EmberEditing … I really liked the second FF. I played the Dawn of Souls version and the extra story was awesome.
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Well any story's better when Sha's the main character owo

-
Saved!DJ_JJSliderEditing … Yeah, FF1 is pretty good. The last dungeons are tricky, though. The game is actually harder on NES, because it's easy to lose the battery backup data. I keep forgetting that unreliable data backup was part of the difficulty back in the days. Meh...
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Just skip it all and play FFVII
-
Saved!DJ_JJSliderEditing … F***in' battery backup. Lol.
-
Saved!Silent GamerEditing … Of the original 3 games, my personal listing would be I > II > III
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … oh yeah FF1 is great. keep playing it husk
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … k I'm putting the disc in now. I have a crown to deliver!
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … holy tits he reapered my red mage instantly and then destroyed everyone but my warrior. Lucky that guy's such a tank or I wouldn't have even made it home. Poor red mage. That's his first time falling in battle. Might as well call his class Magic Knight, guy's a beast.
-
Saved!HelendlocEditing … there is a Mystic Knight class in FF5 ;)
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … How many FFs have you played before Husky?
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … "destroyed everyone but my warrior" yeah, that sounds like FF1
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Nod, zero. I really am playing through the games in numbered order. and this GUY is blocking my way out of the inn! Okay he's gone.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Oh man, you're in for a treat when you get to 7.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 to be precise.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … Deleted by himself
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … some people want to play them in numbered order but it's fucking stupid. Like literally the impression I get from people like that is they know nothing about videogames except for the one or two AAA titles they bought along with their system the day before, then they log on to the internet to claim that so and so series seems interesting and they want to try getting into it.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Hey bro, it's not our fault 7 was the first FF released for us. Blame Japan!
-
Saved!Silent GamerEditing … Why so salty, Rukk? There's no "correct" way to play them, so numbered order is as good a way to go about it as any other.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … well with films there's usually a correct way. Games are more flexible. There isn't so a much a correct way as there are incorrect ways. When a series runs for long enough then going in numbered order is arguably both illogical and ignorant.
-
Saved!HelendlocEditing … Makes sense that someone might want to experience the series the same way someone following it from the start would have experienced it though, right?
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … Deleted by himself
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … You have erred
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … What's the correct way to watch the Star Wars films Rukk?
-
Saved!Silent GamerEditing … They don't share continuity, but the games evolve as the series progress. The best way to witness that is in release order.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … "Makes sense that someone might want to experience the series the same way someone following it from the start would have experienced it though, right?" yes.. it's in fact why I personally find it ridiculous when another user on this site suggested I play the Crash remasters instead of the PS1 classics. However a large majority of gamers who touched FF did not experience the full series in order. (probably almost no one in the US did, even if you exclude FF2, 3, and 5 on account of them not being localized.) A shit ton of people started with FF7 and they pretty much dominate the culture. Anyone who realizes this can understand why it probably makes no sense to play a two or three decade long series in its entirety in order and instead break it up by demographic, gen, or mechanics. Also it should be mentioned that if replicating the same experience everyone else had to have was your intent, then you certainly wouldn't touch any cheap updated version of FF1 and instead go with the NES original. If you're willing to go with remakes then it means your motive is something else entirely- usually story, which would make sense if applied to most series, just not FF.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … But what about people like me who genuinely love gaming and gaming history? Was I wrong to play FF1 onwards on emulators after finding Final Fantasy 7?
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … nod if you played FF7 first then that means you didn't play them in order. Is it wrong to play the old ones afterwards? fuck no that's not wrong.. playing the old ones afterwards the very thing I am advocating.
-
Saved!HelendlocEditing … Why does this matter so much to you?
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … Deleted by himself
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … I don't know, why does it matter to someone that they play the FF games in numbered order?
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … To experience what I missed and how others experienced it.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … To see the evolution of the series as it happened
-
Saved!HelendlocEditing … That's their own choice
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … Yeah they have a choice, that's basically what I'm trying to say. You don't HAVE to listen to the numbers. Listening to the numbers is a /really bad idea/. Most people who have played a game that's at least two gens older than the one that got them into gaming, would know this one basic thing. But some people wanna be like "time to start my final fantasy adventure, what could POSSIBLY go wrong oh god what is this"
-
Saved!HelendlocEditing … But if they want to make the choice to play them in numbered order I don't see why that's a problem, like I said that way you can experience it the same way someone following it from the start would have experienced it, as a gradual progression that lets you appreciate each game for what it was at that time rather than having to compare an earlier game to a later game. I don't see why that's something to get mad over
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Cool Guy you must understand, Rukk will do whatever he can to anger me, and he always succeeds
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … cool guy like I said, that only applies if you play the original versions, not the remakes.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … "You don't HAVE to listen to the numbers. Listening to the numbers is a /really bad idea/." What about what I said about seeing how the series evolved?
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … also I can play FF1-3 and get a feel of what fans of the series back then were going through when they experienced 2 and 3 for the first time. Nothing says that those have to be the first three FF titles I ever played. Hell, by playing games from later gens at all, you're arguably breaking the illusion anyway. How is playing FF7 before playing FF1 that much worse than say, playing Skyrim before playing any of the FFs.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … I think it's better if we switch out Favlslist focus to banning Rukkshard. Lists can come later, some things are just more important.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … I think you're cool for playing them through in order Husky, and I wish I had the time to do it all again.
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Hey thanks, I think you're pretty cool too
-
Saved!Sha EmberEditing … I get Rockshard's opinion and it's not the first time I hear someone defend this point of view. My father, who plays video games since the atari exists, can't go back to retro gaming when it comes to popular series he never tried before. He has to test the last release first. Also; some stubborn people stop playing a series after trying the first opus because it can be boring or too old. I think it's easier to appreciate a series and its lore when the first game you try is a safe bet. That's what I personally did with Suikoden II, Disgaea 2 and FFVII/IX. But to each his own.
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Oh yeah, I also own Suikoden. And Dragon Warrior I & II. And Tales of Phantasia. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWjBDPKGJPk
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … Oh I also own the Mother trilogy on GBA (fan translation loaded onto a cart). So many old RPGs. So little time.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … I own all old RPGs. And when I say all, I mean all.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Some old games are still my favourites, I can appreciate an old game like I would a new one, the first console I owned was an Atari 2600 so I've been there and seen it all, I'm not some new kid that won't play a game because it doesn't have the best graphics. Look at my lists, my top two games are both over 20 years old and RPGs, #4 is 17 years old. 5 is 14 years old, 6 is 25 years old, Resi 2 is 20 years old Wings at #13 is 28 years old, SimCity on Snes is 27 years old as is Birds of Prey, Alex Kidd is 32 years old, my favourite platformer Mario 3 is 30 years old..... I could go on and on all day......
-
Saved!Silent GamerEditing … Yea, being unable to appreciate older games is your own problem. Not everyone has that issue. I will most likely always start with the first game in a series if I am trying it for the first time. Playing a newer version and then going backwards in the series can cause issues too. You get so used to all the fine-tuned features that going back to the earlier games can be a struggle, as their absence is more noticeable.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … you literally just fucking contradicted yourself
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … "being unable to appreciate older games is your own problem" "going back to the earlier games can be a struggle"
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … "you literally just fucking contradicted yourself" Did he?
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … He explained that you get used to the fine tuning later games bring, and I agree. It doesn't mean you can't appreciate the old games though.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … FF7 on the PS could offer way more in gameplay and everything else than FF1 could on the NES. Games are getting better all the time, more power means devs can do more.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … Deleted by himself
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … " It doesn't mean you can't appreciate the old games though." so what's wrong with playing the older games later. I can do what he did to me just now and say it's his own fault for struggling with them.
-
Saved!NodleyEditing … Think of it this way. Anthony Joshua would KO Manny Paquiao in one punch, he's bigger, stronger, heavier etc, it's a no contest. I still appreciate mannys skills.
-
Saved!Silent GamerEditing … That was my point Rukk. That it's totally personal. A point I've been trying to make to you since we started interacting on here. That there is no objective way to do things and no-one is "right" or "wrong"
-
Saved!Husky WingEditing … gah RUKKK
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … sometimes it's better to go in reverse order, that way you begin with the most accessible entry and gradually work backwards. Instead of having elements added one by one that improve the games, you have those things taken away, thereby increasing the difficulty as you become more experienced. It also leaves you with the option to just quit at any point if you've had enough. You know you'd not be missing out on much because, seeing as you're going backward, you can safely assume each game only gets more primitive than the last. It sort of serves as a test of enthusiasm toward a series. This way you end up playing more games in series you enjoy / interested in and fewer games in the series you dislike, instead of forcing yourself to play every series from the beginning just to get to the installments you will maybe like.
-
Saved!rockshard PhDEditing … that said, FF is a very unconventional example compared to other series the more I think about it. Not just because it's so long running, but only 1 through 10 could be said to follow a similar formula, after that not only do the games go in wildly different directions but the general consensus on them is pretty divided. But at the same time 1-10 is starting to look retro at this point.
-
Saved!DJ_JJSliderEditing … I think FF1 set the bar for a lot of RPGs. Just the idea of seeing both monsters and the main characters on one screen was groundbreaking. I know a lot of the later games refined mechanics, but seeing the characters was a big deal. And uh...that's one reason why I returned my copy of Bioshock...
