The plot is generic and the acting quality varies wildly, with a lot of silly moments, but overall I can't help but love this film. I'm not normally a fan of "big dumb action movies" but Pacific Rim just hits all the right notes for me, being a great homage to super robot anime. The Raleigh/Mako friendship is also refreshing in its platonicness, and Idris Elba owns every scene he's in. And the score is actually pretty good. Despite its severe flaws it's probably one of my favorite movies of the 2010s, and certainly one of the most watchable. It helps that the thing is clearly a passion project and not a complete money-grab, and everyone clearly had a blast making it.

But really I just come for the mechas. The monsters too, but mostly the mechas. We need more live-action mechas, because they are awesome when done well.

Editing … I never finished it, because some of the acting between Rinko and the other actors looked kind of awkward. And I became a huge fan of her's after watching Babel and The Sky Crawlers. Then again, it took Ken Watanabe a few tries to strike the right tone in America. Maybe I'll try to finish it. And watch the robots. Robots are boss.

Editing … Yeah the acting isn't the best from most of them but giant robots/mechas are one of my favorite tropes so...
