Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" brought folk music into the mainstream for good. F*** conventions--this was about mixing good ol' songs about poverty and desolation with the loud stadium atmosphere of rock. All the folk purists hated it, but Dylan didn't give a f*** about what was folk was supposed to be. That's really what made Highway 61 such a classic. It combined brash vocals, wild organ solos, whistles and a bunch of other jumbled ideas into an Americana masterpiece.
