Two Spanish missionaries seek to find their missing Padre, who vanished in Japan and left a mysterious letter with a trader. Silence is one of the most thrilling Scorcese stories, in which Jesuit priests must sacrifice their open religion in a nationalistic foreign country. Not the easiest topic for a movie, but the script carries lots of dramatic weight. Silence really could have earned Best Picture of the Year. I guess the Academy didn't want to choose a movie with intense violence and emotion this time. Such a shame.
