I think my opinion of Nintendo games has softened in recent years, because there was definitely a long stretch of time when this would have made me vomit too. I think it started when I bought a Wii for my daughters, popped in a copy of Kirby's Epic Yarn, and was like "awwwww". I eventually picked up a WiiU for my daughters too, and ended up really getting into Splatoon & Pikmin 3, and I was like "what the hell is going on here?". I think I've been infected with something.
