The Strokes was a throwback to the New York punk rock scene, but Interpol turned that focus back onto the dark themes of Joy Division. It was one of the most appropriate tones, back when everyone in America was talking about the tragedy of 9/11. Interpol was just the perfect dark music at that time when everything seemed gloomy.
