Ranking the movies: 5 > 4 > 7-1 > 7-2 > 1 > 2 > 3 > 6. Haven't read the books, and if anything I'll probably get the audiobooks. I'd like to do that, because the movies are so damn gloomy and that was a big down side for me.

Editing … The books are all gloom and doom after the fourth one. First two are nice and magical, third and fourth have some of that and some seriousness, but after that it just took a nose dive. But that might be just me.

Editing … For me the movies go 2 > 1 > 6 > 5 > 3 > 7-1 > 4 (did not watch 7-2) and the books go 5 > 3 > 4 > 1 > 2 > 6 > 7. I had serious doom and gloom problems with the fourth movie but not the others. I dislike movies 3, 7-1, and 4 and book 7. The rest I like. The first two movies are two of my favorite movies and the first five books are five of my favorite books. I also loved the Chamber of Secrets ps2 game.

Editing … I'd say the books go 4>7>5>6>3>2>1 and the films (which are good but not in same leagues as the books) go 3>5>6>4>2>1>7 part 2>7 part 1. I never had an issue with the books being too dark, they seemed to grow up at about the same rate I did over the years it took for the books to come out and they always had a balance with there still being cheer and magic in the world.

Editing … Yeah, I think there just wasn't enough time in the movies to reasonably get everything from the books, so a lot of the lighter parts probably got cut (though, Rob did say that between the two DH movies there wasn't really anything from the books that didn't make it in).

Editing … The first two movies pretty much cover the whole books, which is a big part of why I liked them so much. I don't even feel like anyone who saw those two even really needs to read the books. The third movie is where the changes started to irritate me. I didn't like the last book and I hated movie 7 so I didn't even deal with movie 8.

Editing … @Richard Pale I think a lot of people around your age enjoyed Harry Potter so incredibly much partly because the books grew with them. Of course they are also really well written.

Editing … I was eight when the first movie came out and I started reading the books. Perfect age. I'd just turned 11 when I read book 5 (in a day) and I could relate to the anger in that story a lot.
