"Fez" is nothing more than another generic 2D platformer where you have to climb a series of mostly vertical levels … or *is* it?

Once the fluffy critter called Gomez gets to wear the eponymous fez you'll see the world with new eyes. It allows you to rotate the camera sideways, resulting in – literally – a new dimension of gameplay.

And the game design makes full use of that notion; on that shift in perspective; on the idea of interacting with objects from a higher dimension: be it the platforming, the puzzles or even the story; from the Hypercube companion to the 3-dimensional placement of seemingly unsuspicious 2D platforms; from hidden doors to animals seemingly moving on the spot from certain perspectives – you will find this concept everywhere. "Fez" is well-crafted like that.

Editing … Speaking of cute little animals, there are plenty of them who just add to the already charming atmosphere that stems from the adorable character design, sexy chiptune sound canvas and pretty pixel art style. The soundtrack is done by Disasterpeace – and - it - is - marvellous! Fittingly chilly, soothing and transcendent … well worthy of a song of praise of its own. On top of that, Gomez sports a colorful palette of animations, as well as a refreshing amount of freedom for a 2D platformer. I mean, he can even grab onto ledges and shimmy *around* them, for fuck's sake.

Editing … The jumping controls do feel a bit floaty and heavy. But that quickly becomes surprisingly irrelevant as the quirky world, the atmosphere, and the sheer variety of puzzles make you forget that "weight", and they all more than make up for it. Not *that* surprising, though, once you realize that this is way more a puzzle game than a platformer.

Editing … And there are *a lot* of puzzles. They are often very cryptic and solving them (without a guide) was especially satisfying to me. It *is* possible to solve them without a guide due to the well-crafted puzzle design and well-hidden in-game hints. I was delighted by many of the smart and unorthodox puzzle ideas. New elements are added even in the later areas – even-*even* in the New Game+ – so that the game stayed fresh until the end … and far beyond.

Editing … *Except* for the final two puzzles, which are untypically unsolvable with mere in-game knowledge. I'll substract points from the perfect score just for that.

Editing … Phil Fish may be an arrogant prick but he made a terribly awesome game here.

Editing … I've listened to the soundtrack way sooner than I've played the game. I mean, tell me about it. It's greatly fitting the game – AND can be enjoyed on its own! — Why am I excited? Because of all the comments? I just do it like that because you can't write a line break within a single comment.
