Just re-watched it. There's too much toilet humor, pop songs, and references, and it's STILL a damn fine movie. I find the characterization and story much more clever and original than in the first movie. Changing the main character's appearance for so much of the movie is not something you expect a mainstream film to do. And though there's plenty of jokes, Shrek and Fiona's issues are still given lots of serious time and attention, and are way more interesting to me than in the first movie. But it's also silly enough to not feel all melodramatic. Plus the Fairy Godmother is a more memorable villain than that short guy, and the cast feels more complete with Puss in Boots. This was around when sequel movies became worthwhile.
