Sleater-Kinney's fourth album demonstrated the band's artistic maturity. If the previous album showed how the band likes to rock out, The Hot Rock showed how they wanted to prove a point to all the pundits who doubted the all-girl punk band. Each song covers much darker themes, decorated with the vocalists' penchants for singing opposing melodies. The music video for "Get Up" also became a classic, thanks to rising indie movie director Miranda July.
