It is weird, lots of things it does are kind of parodies of anime tropes but it does have a coherent plot that all comes together. It takes silly stuff and treats it as if it's totally normal and serious on purpose. It's so good at creating hype for whatever is going on. I'd say it's important to watch the subs by Underwater as they put lots of effort into typesetting them to match the feel of the show as opposed to most of the other groups that just slapped white text over everything.

The site was supposed to make it into something more presentable but it fails pretty hard. There's no way to even remove the ratings. If you don't rate an anime the rating is still displayed but it's a 0. Even if I write my own comment, it doesn't show. The site is even worse than favslist. But that's good too I guess, since it lets us appreciate favslist more and helps remind us that there are sites much worse than it. Sites like myanimelist. Lol oh man how did MAL gain so much traction I have no idea.

Like many other applications / websites there is a settings page where you can basically change everything that you mentioned. You also can't even rate things as 0 you can only rate them 1-10 or "-". I work tech support and talk to people like this all day, "I've spent 0.2 seconds looking at the page after the login screen and I just can't figure anything out! This is useless!." Take some initiative, it's basically the millennial equivalent of not knowing how to use a TV remote.

Editing … I've watched over 400 anime, I'm watching 13 series at the same time right now and have another 13 on hold for later. No, I can't remember all the episode numbers off the top of my head. Does a plaintext list have subtitle reviews? No. Show review system? Related shows? genre stats? user score comparison? automatic watch tracking via app? producer/staff/VA lookup? automatic sequel notification? No. Literally anything other than "It's a list" is not provided by a plaintext list. Good luck getting any detailed stats from a self constructed plaintext list without basically manually importing all the details of a show each time. Having watched something and wanting to watch something by the same studio/that has the same VA/producer is basically one click away. I can read spoiler free descriptions of shows and see how people who liked similar things to me liked the show. There are just so many advantages I don't see the point in listing any more. On the forums a few days ago I sent Silent my list ordered by score. It took about 5 seconds and I'm sure anyone would attest to that being more useful than an unstructured plaintext file. The layout of the list is quite intuitive. I used to track my stuff manually in a spreadsheet and it was a ballache, MAL reduced that to 'click one and sometimes two buttons'. The mobile site is new / beta as far as I am aware. I don't use it.

Editing … The greatest thing in my opinion about MAL (and, apart from the community, I'd say I like MAL a bit more than Favslist, tbh) is the customization, you can change your lists how you want and it's really not that hard, you just have to want it. There's also user-made lists that are overly costumized, which is what I'm using. Those sometimes bug, but besides that, even the standard one gives you a lot of choice in the information you want to be presented and how you want to be presented. If you want you can remove the scores from the list, maybe make space for your comments. Here, here's my manga list: https://myanimelist.net/mangalist/CrashRHCP? and here's my anime list: https://myanimelist.net/animelist/CrashRHCP? even those two are heavily different. (Although both Steins;Gate themed)

Editing … "Does a plaintext list have subtitle reviews?" "Show review system?" A plaintext list has whatever you want. Also my MAL doesn't display my comments anyway, at least not on mobile. Maybe on desktop if I fiddle with the settings enough. And a plaintext lets you edit all your comments at once. I thought of a fix for my MAL list, which is to list all my anime as watching instead of completed. Great idea until I realized I'd have to change each and every anime from "completed" to "watching" one at a time. And I'd have to do it all over again if I change my mind or in the unlikely case that MAL fixes their shit. "automatic watch tracking via app" wat? "On the forums a few days ago I sent Silent my list ordered by score. It took about 5 seconds and I'm sure anyone would attest to that being more useful than an unstructured plaintext file." In the time it took to create a MAL list and rate each anime you could have done the exact same thing in plain text. You generally have to type the name of each anime anyway in order to add it to your MAL. :p

True, but on the flipside you can change your scores much more easily. You guys mention community. What community? How do you interact with a community by making a list in a vacuum and adding ratings to it? I'm guessing there's a forum or something you're holding out on, making MAL just like many other sites (favslist included) that have a forum but in which the site's so called primary function is hopelessly redundant or very poorly implemented. P.s. I didn't download the app, I simply opened the link silent gamer posted. And I use a computer, it happens to be a phone, and it can access the desktop version of MAL just fine. The link took me to the mobile version by default though. Much respect to MAL for including a mobile site as an afterthought.

Meaning if you have favorites you have to add them again to watching/completed. Likewise if you have watching/completed anime and rate it a 10 it doesn't show up in your favorite anime. You have to add that shit TWICE. Also, the mobile site doesn't even display favorites. Also, there is no way to change the order if your favorites list on a touchscreen device, not even if you use the desktop site. Because the only way to move them is to click and drag. "hi I'm a complete idiot, so I will use this MAL site to decide what anime to watch next. Hey this anime was rated 8.2. But there's no way to show which anime I liked except by rating it, so question is do I rate everything a 10 and just not bother listing anime I didn't like, or do I list everything and just give them lower ratings, and set my list to sort by score by default like you did? But if I did that then it essentially becomes a favslist list except that in order to change the order of two anime I'd have to change the score of one of the anime and then change the score of the other one. I can already see where this is going. What a failed culture.

These are very simple concepts that you clearly don't understand or at the very least consider yourself above for some reason. You are looking at things that are fundamentally different and trying to make them the same just because they share some minor function. It would be like saying a hand warmer and a flamethrower were the same because they both involved heat or that a hammer and screwdriver served the same function because they are both tools. You have clearly missed the point of what this website is actually for and I'm quite confident that it's as plain as day for the majority of people reading this thread. I'm sure the hundreds of thousands of users of MAL have specifically gone out of their way to make their lives more inconvenient and that you are much smarter than all of them with your fresh and unique viewpoint of what site features should be used for as opposed to what they were designed for. Well done.

"You are looking at things that are fundamentally different and trying to make them the same just because they share some minor function." You must be on some good shit if you think giving something the highest possible score is **FUNDAMENTALLY** different from setting it as your favorite. Why the heck does MAL even have a 10 point rating system if not even the difference between a 9 and 10 means anything? I have no reason not to jist rate everything 10 since i have to manually set my favorites anyway. Wouldn't it make more sense of favorites displayed your highest rated anime, thereby challenging me to rate certain anime less? You get what I'm saying, right? Nah who am I kidding, you probably don't. "You have clearly missed the point of what this website is actually for" No i think i got it, it's a site for morons to spend all their time rating anime and managing their MAL profile. But does the site creator know that? Probably not seeing as unfunctional the mobile site is or the fact the site seriously uses a 10 point rating system. The site is a waste product of human stupidity, nerd culture, and epidemic ocd. Am I saying I'm smarter than the hundreds of MAL users? No, I'm saying that none of them will be using MAL forever. In the meantime however ill do them a service and not use MAL (which is unusable to me anyway) to avoid the potential risk of skewing the scores, recommendations features, and such. Those things would be less accurate if too many non-moronic people's opinions were added into the mix.

It lets you add one card at a time just like MAL but everything is added to a single paste and the site generates your list page from that, meaning that conceivably you can write up or edit the whole paste at once instead of refreshing/loading a page for every single edit like you would have to for sites like MAL and backloggery. This is how the entire internet should work. EDIT: Tappedout even leys you change the quantity of each card right when viewing the deck. Imagine if rating anime worked this way...

The worldwide anime (or gaming) community doesn't really care about you, not in general. A couple people might, Hell, I do, I don't even know why, otherwise I wouldn't be replying, but 99.9999% doesn't. EITHER way, there's a lot of ways you can affect someone in MAL, and it's not with the rating system. There's the forums, the clubs, the reviews and recommendations, all features I used to pick more manga to read. There's also the fantastic event every Christmas where you get a secret Santa who recommends you something based on your MAL and a list of specified parameters you have to fill to enter (fav genres, manga or anime, max num of chapters, etc...). All things that enhance the MAL experience further than just "a list site" but I assume you'll dislike all of those, because they aren't a notepad.
