This list suggestion has got me thinking about a lot of trailers recently and I was reminded of this one:

I remember being blown away at the possibilities the new gen would bring to #Final Fantasy. From this trailer, I came to the conclusion that Final Fantasy XVI would probably be the first true open-world game in the series. #Hiroyuki Ito once stated that technology was "...getting closer and closer to the optimum level where I can do exactly what I want to." and, bearing in mind that until recently, Square Enix paid little attention to the PC space, I can only assume he was talking about consoles. JRPG's have arrguably all been headed in the same direction of late, with a focus on trying to create an expansive sprawling open-world, similar in vein to their Western counter-parts. While there were some successful attempts at this (#Xenoblade Chronicles comes to mind), I feel that we have yet to see an open-world JRPG of the graphical fidelity Square Enix is known for. With games like #Horizon: Zero Dawn and #The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, it looks like this generation is going to be an era filled with visually stunning fully open RPG's. I for one would be excited to see a Final Fantasy go in this direction and I am curious as to what shape the battle system would take. My guess would be a mix of real-time and menu-based combat. We can already see the beginnings of this in #Final Fantasy Type-0, #Final Fantasy XV and #Final Fantasy VII Remake. Overall, although I know it is waaaaaaay too early to get excited about the prospect of a Final Fantasy XVI, I would love for nothing more than to have the game go in this direction, helmed by Hiroyuki Ito :D

Editing … Wasn't Agni's Philosophy a showcase for the Luminous Engine? XV is using it, and it is a "true open world game" and it actually looks fun to play unlike Witcher 3. Too bad its way too limited, it's clearly meant for a more linear design given the visual sacrifices they had to make to XV's visuals.

Editing … It was, yes, but XV isn't truly open-world at all, it is just a series of rather large areas. The route they originally seemed to be going for (after XV) was similar to #Crackdown 3. Utilising Cloud technology to render a graphically strong, vibrant open-world. http://www.polygon.com/2014/6/13/5795778/project-flare-square-enix-e3-skyrim Although, with the closing of Shinra Technologies, I am no longer sure if they are following this course.

Editing … Square's future is entirely dependant on the success of XV and VII Remake, if those fail I expect them to abandon consoles...

Editing … Sadly, I agree. However, I have faith in XV.
