I love how this mini-series makes clever references throughout to specific moments and dialogue from the game (such as the woman in Lavender Town who points out the "white hand" on Red's shoulder when he says he doesn't believe in ghosts). But with the entire game's events crammed into 4 episodes, the sense of scale and accomplishment as one progresses through the games is lost. Any struggles Red faces are short-lived, making his character something of a "Mary Sue," and despite the OVA's targeting an older audience, it still relentlessly crams the "believe in your Pokemon and you can do anything" dogma down the viewers' throats. It's just an okay nod to the original games, and an interesting peek at what the full-length Pokemon anime series could have been.
