Alright Andrew Niccol, I forgive you for The Host. After all you got a raw deal with that movie, it being an adaptation of a Stephenie Meyer novel and all. Hell I can see why you'd want to make the film as it had something unique going for it, just unfortunate that it had to come from a Meyer "novel". Anyways. I really enjoyed Good Kill. Niccol's return to the war genre is an insightful & compelling look at this new age of warfare. It plays the notes that most all war movies try to play, the ethical conundrums that most individuals must face in war - things like that. What makes Good Kill so interesting to me is the subject matter, that being of a drone pilot played by Ethan Hawke. Niccol's films make for a rather captivating study of an individual who, while technically so far away from war, is still just as effected by it. And not only does he have the weight of the tolls of war on him he also has the struggles of everyday life put on him as well. This comes out wonderfully by Hawke's performance of a man who is, more or less, getting beaten down on all fronts. He goes to work to ethical question his actions & the effects of his job to only then go home to a failing marriage, all the while as he tries to drink away his anger & pain - he can possibly handle one or the other, but not both. It's those very qualities that makes Good Kill such a good film. Really, the only thing it lacks is raw energy. I just wish that Niccol's was more angry here because I believe that's what the film is missing to make it something really special. Regardless this is still a good film, one that is trying to say a whole lot about how warfare is conducted in this age and the effects it has.
