    Movie #16/1177
    #Witchcraft Through The Ages
Häxan came way before it should have. This is both a good and a bad thing. It's innovative, crafty, clever. It does things that no other movie had done at that point, and touches subjects that no other film would dare to touch in such manner for the next twenty years. The directing is absolutely sublime, and the special effects stand the test of time.
But. It would have been so much more had it been done ten years later. This movie could have used sound in so many innovative ways. My love-hate relationship with silent films will never be as strong as it is with Häxan. The writing is great, and I would have loved to hear it. Oh well. Maybe sound would have killed Häxan's magic. It is truly a wonderful film.

Editing … Yeah, it was in the Criterion Collection package I have. I thought it was interesting at first, but on second viewing it was bad. It's fun if you've already seen the movie, but if the first time you see it is the re-release, it will be horrible.

    Horror Movie #4/101

Häxan is a weird film in all the right ways. The odd mixture of documentary-style footage and nightmarish. dramatic horror sequences go very well together and creates something unlike anything else I can think of. The film handles issues such as mental illness and superstition with a surprising level of compassion and understanding for its time, and sadly a lot of the topics brought up in Häxan can be applied to modern society as well. It also holds some impressive special effects and visuals, including some early usage of stop motion animation. I have to give some additional praise to the director, Benjamin Christensen, for his portrayal of the devil in this film. He comes off as a rather troublesome & fun-loving guy!
