My favorite Star Wars movie. A lot of people say Empire is better but I'd say they're equal, because each one tells a different kind of story. A New Hope has a a more classic plot that's executed perfectly, with the Death Star battle being one of the best action scenes in all of cinema, while Empire excels at telling each character's individual story well.

Here's a short plot summary that shows how similar A New Hope and Force Awakens truly are:

    Wow
this was somehow even better than I remembered
one of the greatest movies of all time
how did you do it, Lucas?

The prequels all look like absolute shit compared to this movie. It makes me furious that they even exist.

Editing … Challenge breeds creativity as they say. His best works were produced under extreme pressures. Once they gave him a boat-load of cash and free reign, he attached so many bells and whistles that the true work was lost beneath it all

Editing … it's aged amazingly well. All three of the prequels have godawful effects, but the traditional effects of the originals will always hold up.

Editing … Tbh, I'm pretty sure the edition that you saw has all the special effects retweeked, since Lucas has been doing that since 1997 apparently.

The second worst movie in the whole saga.

I'd rather watch droidikas blow shit up than having to endure another half hour of some farm boy fucking around on a desert planet.

Editing … I'd rather watch a half hour of "some farm boy fucking around on a desert planet" then another 10sec of Anakin & Padme trying to convince me that the love they have for each other is super duper genuine and that their chemistry really isn't that of just two chairs stacked on top of each other.

Editing … A New Hope is the best movie in the series. The beginning scenes on Tattooine provide emotional context for Luke's character and the rest of the movie. It's the only one where they bother establishing the characters' motivations.

Alright, so here begins what will be my long-winded opinion's of each Star Wars film, starting where it all began in 1977 with Star Wars. Now this probably won't be all that long-winded because really what more can I add that hasn't already been stated? This is flat out an incredible film experience, a groundbreaking & revolutionary film for its time. It set a new highpoint for visuals that wasn't really topped until Blade Runner came around in `82. But the most significant achievement Star Wars was establishing the idea of the Summer Blockbuster, the notion of big budget spectacles for the sake of profits. For better or worse Star Wars basically created the Summer Blockbuster genre, a genre I must admit I loathe yet understand why it exists. Because above all else Star Wars showed one thing, just how fun and imaginative the medium can be. The landscape of `70's American cinema is marked with many profound dramatic films that I personally believe that are some of the best films ever made. Star Wars isn't a film that would fall into that sort of category and it doesn't have to because it's great for what it is - a rousing adventure tale. Now does that mean doesn't have any faults? Absolutely not because it does have have them. The most apparent one is the dialogue, it's incredibly cheesy and at times incredibly cringe-worthy. Ford was right when he said that people don't talk like this because they damn well don't, but I cannot deny that there is a sort of charm to it all. Effects at times don't look all that great either. The fixing of Greedo shooting first in post looks absolutely ridiculous, but this is the late `70s and it seems a bit unfair to judge it harshly on that. And if I wanted I can go on pocking holes & pointing out things that don't quite make much sense at all but that doesn't feel right to me. The suspension of disbelief - the general idea of forgiving the impossible & the illogical parts of a story - is something I believe implies to something like Star Wars. There is just to much fun to be had with this that being cynical here feels wrong. And that's what best sums up Star Wars to me. It is a really really really fun ride that I can jump on at any time and know that I'm in for a great time.

The film that started the massive franchise, this film sets the universe up. Showing us the characters we will soon have fun with, the worlds that will be explored, and the danger our heroes will face. The film has a fantastic and iconic opening, followed by a slow first act, but picks back up afterwards and keeps it through the end. A great film that was perfect for starting a beloved franchise.
