Is anybody else kinda disappointed that photos are now ruined? Everything you see on the internet might be fake or altered because of photoshop or something. And you can even do it on mobile phones with filters. Everything you see might be totally fake. I pretty much just assume all new great pictures are fake now because I got fooled so many times before. It's become a thing. And now they fake videos too like that Tom Cruise thing.

Maybe it's my age, but those old perfect pictures looked amazing. And you knew it was 100% real. Somebody did good! It was a talent to admire. I just can't feel the same way about something that isn't real.

Picture the best photo you ever saw, maybe the milkyway(my favourite), I dunno. Those amazing photos that are actually real are incredible. Nature, animals, even just a family smiling together back in 1887.... The subject doesn't matter, there is an art in photography and it's gone because everything you see could be a lie.

Editing … I just see them as different genres. The art of photography is not gone it's just easier to alter photos or AI generate them, but there are still many serious photographers taking "real" pictures. Altered or generated pictures are like hyper realistic painting which can take liberties unconstrained by reality. It can be used to show imagination, but it can also be used to fool people. I think it can become a quite confusing thing for humanity. It is however something we will either have to learn to distinguish and see in context or not care so much about. We'd have to not care about what is real or fantasy, which sounds completely dysfunctional but also the most realistic course of events if I think about it. But I think people will always be interested in real photography. It's always interesting to see actual scenes in the world showing special moments or lighting in reality.

Editing … also funny think about a lot of space photo's. We all have pictures of galaxies and stuff in our head, but those have always been artist interpretations but they determine how we see space in our minds. Real pictures are hard to make, rare and ugly.

Editing … Its nothing new. Photos were being faked as far back as the moon landing. There was also this: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cottingley_Fairies ticks me off too.. bc now there's no way to trust whether a photo of faeries, unicorns, etc are genuine or not.

Editing … I don't trust anything online. Look at people you know and then go look at their social media profile picture. Most of the time it's like it's not the same person.

Editing … Yup doctoring photos is as old as photography because photo's are of course only a record of light on a sensor or film and not a true copy of reality. What makes it different today though is that it has become extremely easy, convincing and accessible to manipulate our image of reality that is based on our experience of the natural world and it's everywhere these days. Pictures still effect us no matter if they are real or not, but people always want to make their fantasies a reality and anything that can strengthen the sense of the fantasy becoming real does further blur the mental lines people have of what is real and what is not beyond what was already the case.

Editing … Maybe it is just some people who will be severely affected by it like vulnerable people who want to escape their shit life, but I bet everyone will be effected at least in little subtle ways as our technologies and fictional worlds become more and more immersive. Just think how confusing it is to your body to play a hypothetical good vr game that has full body movement and stuff. Your body thinks it is real and in the moment of play you accept it as real but then you get out of the game and everything you could do there suddenly stops. I think it could seriously fuck some people in the head.

Went over to drop off my film at the camera shop today. Apparently they close at 5 and I got there at 5:15. -.- I guess I'll have to try another camera shop since I can't get over there in time after work. The wait continues...
