"Hoarding disorder is different from collecting. People who have collections, such as stamps or model cars, deliberately search out specific items, categorize them and carefully display their collections. Although collections can be large, they aren't usually cluttered and they don't cause the distress and impairments that are part of hoarding disorder."

Editing … Well, I find collecting to be addicting and I like to collect pretty much everything, but I think it still counts as collecting. (Wallpapers, albums, Steam games, Stephen King books, anime figurines, etc...)

Editing … I think my cousin might have at some point. His brother died of cancer when he was 20 and it affected him very badly. One of my mates helped him clean out his apartment once, I never saw it myself though.

Editing … I'm afraid my mom and to a lesser extent my dad have a hoarding disorder. Whenever I throw away one of own (!) possessions (e.g. a broken USB stick or a dvd case), my mom actually goes through our garbage bin and takes it back out. When I asked her why she did that, she replied: "it could still be useful."

Editing … The only room in my parents' house that is tidy and not cluttered is mine. I realize they have a problem so I've helped them several times already cleaning up that mess, but I live 200 km away from them so when I come to visit them a few months later, everything looks the same again. Useless shit everywhere.

Editing … I'm not a psychologist but unless she really can't throw stuff away and their house is a mess they are probably fine. Older generations tend to hold on to stuff far longer than we do, they repaired shoes and shit.

Editing … One of my sisters is the same. When she moved back in with our parents a few months ago, there wasn't enough room to store all of her furniture in our attic, because it was so full of crap already. So she put her stuff in my room. When I confronted her about it, she got upset with me. I'm the one who should be upset here ffs.

Editing … Me on the other hand? I have zero reservations getting rid of my own shit. I collect stuff and proudly display it. When I'm no longer interested in it, I sometimes sell my old comic books for example. There's a fine line between hoarding and collecting.
