Disappointed is not a strong enough word for what I feel right now.

Editing … Oh man, I thought you'd enjoy it. Didn't think it'd be a top 10 movie, but reckoned it'd break into your top 100. What went wrong?

Editing … Everything up until the last half an hour. I'm still struggling to understand the need for Ford's character. Roy was the most interesting thing about this film and the entire end scene involving him was something special. The first half contained nothing of interest or importance. The "relationship" between Deckhard and Rachael is the most forced/rushed/nonsense thing I have seen in some time.

Editing … I'm with ya on this one. This movie should have been an instant fav for me. 80s sci-fi, cyberpunk, Harrison Ford, just a few of my favorite things. But I was thoroughly unimpressed, and dare I say it, bored with it. I tried really hard to like it, but it just felt empty to me. I was pretty disappointed to. The art direction was topnotch though.

Editing … This isn't an opinion that surprises me. I think it retroactively gets a lot of credit for the era in which it was released, and the cinematography is still very easy on the eyes. Harrison is always fun to watch, and the movie's concept is very interesting, but it is a slow burn, and the action isn't very interesting in the few moments where there is any. The Deckard/Rachel relationship clearly paints Deckard as a character that has little (if any) respect for replicants, as well as a character of moral ambiguity; but her model is humanized enough for him to feel empathy for her (at times). However, it really isn't a relationship that adds any worthwhile insight towards Deckard's hunt for Roy's replicant group (which is the primary plot), and can easily seem like a waste of substantial screen time because of it.

Editing … I think Ridley Scott wanted to incorporate more depth to this concept, but didn't really execute those ideas very well in the pre-production stage. Once he committed to what was already shot, the only way to then re-work these ideas was to recut existing footage. Personally, I do think it's an ambitious movie, but it doesn't flow as well as it could have. Admittedly, I scored it an 8 here more out of respect for its legacy rather than because I love the movie. For as much as some fans love to analyze this movie, I really don't think that there's much to analyze. For me, it's a decent movie with very nice cinematography, that scratches that 80s futuristic vibe what I like to indulge in from time to time. In other words, far from a masterpiece, but I also get why there would be a fandom for it. I think Kathryn Bigelow's "Strange Days" was a more fun (and interesting) watch in the cyberpunk genre, but it's also hard to deny that Blade Runner was a trendsetter.

Editing … A big part of the movie is Rick developing that respect for replicants, as the question is proposed as to what "makes us human." Rachel wasn't a "humanized" model, she just thought she was human because of her memories. The other replicants, the ones Rick are hunting, are just the same as her, but they were put in an environment where they were told they were replicants. However, they still felt human because of their memories. They weren't real memories, no, but they're real to whoever remembers them. The argument that memories are what make us human wouldn't have served much purpose if Rick always held respect for replicants.

Editing … Ah, I often remember that it took 100 questions for Deckard to distinguish her as a replicant, and that it previously (and normally) took 40 questions to expose replicants. Roy's right hand man buckled in less than 5 questions early in the movie as well, so I always figured that Rachel was established as a more expressive model. Either way, his relationship with Rachel didn't alter his hunt for Roy and his group, nor do I think that Roy's final act had much influence on Deckard's desire to hide Rachel - He was kinda leaning that way anyway.

Watching this for the first time. And what far-flung future is this story set in?

    2019, lol :p

We were so hopeful for the future of technology, haha. I kind of feel like we have let down the older generation :p

Editing … While the film depicts technology way beyond our own, the Earth is also polluted to the point where most animal life has died off, so I think we're doing alright. On the other hand we have another three years to go, and a certain president elect of a certain country has promised to give the environment a royal butt-fucking, so I guess only time will tell.
