This has to be the worst film that writer/director Cameron Crowe has ever made, and it really pains me to say that. I love the work of Cameron Crowe - Say Anything, Jerry MaGuire, and Almost Famous are movies I adore. This is a man who has shown just how much talent he has and to see him make a movie like this truly upsets me. Sure, his career has been more or less at a steady decline ever since Vanilla Sky but I never thought he had a movie like this in him. Aloha is the bottom of the barrel as far as I'm concerned, I just cannot believe he has an even worse film in him. So then what's the problem? Well to start the whole movie feels like a jumble mess. It took me roughly an 1hr 20min to finally understand just what the hell was going on story wise, in an 1hr 45min movie. And that's not for the lack of trying because I tried damn hard to follow this movie. It is also not because the film is incredibly complex or ambitious like Vanilla Sky. No, this 100% comes from the fact that the film feels incredibly incomplete. Far too much is going on here. Aloha is a film with too much story, occupied by character who are either poorly developed/explained or are only there to waste time. The result is a fucking mess. I, for the life of me, cannot explain just what this movie is about. It tries to hard to achieve too much and as a result does none of what it sets out to do well. What I can say, for a fact, is that this is one shitty rom-com. It's weighed down immensely by its convention. And that is probably the one thing I hate by this movie, its convention. That's because Cameron Crowe's early works was so good at working within convention. That's not the case here at all. For the entire time I felt like I was the railroad of the rom-com. Making all the required stops until I reached the required "everyone's happy" ending, and boy oh boy was it a shit one. The ending is an outright cop-out, an insulting one at that - it might as well of been Crowe giving me the middle finger because that's what it feels like. I despise this movie, I hated nearly every second of it. So what can be taken away from this film? That Cameron Crowe has nowhere to look but up, hopefully.
