Not a huge franchise, but Age of Empires is possibly the best group of RTS games released during the series lifespan, especially if including the Mythology spinoff. Age of Empires 2 in particular is arguably the best RTS game ever released, especially discounting games with "craft" in their title. The series also managed to include elements of more Civ-like games in the RTS experience, making something innovative yet familiar.
