Every time the GEZ fee is due, I raise my hand up in the air in agony, and shout "Damn you @@Michael Z. Damn you to hell. I could've bought several video games that I'm not even interested in with that money!"

You as an employee of ZDF are responsible for everything that is wrong with this country.

This is why we can't have nice things; and I don't even watch TV ffs.

    Greedy wankers

Editing … It's basically the same as the TV license, it's just thst unlike its British counterpart the GEZ doesn't send threatening letters to every household in the country but instead now deducts a license fee from everyone who isn't deaf snd blind, or rather has the form to prove it. Speaking of German bureaucracy, a bit rich for a civil servant to lecture me, especially one who works for the finance office, aka the realm of satan. rocks and glass houses and all that.

Do you guys get TV channels without commercial breaks too then? @Ara we can own a TV but can't watch it without a licence. They send people round to all non-licensed homes with some device to see if you use it. If you do, it's time to pack your toothbrush for jail.

Editing … hihi, "the realm of satan" got a chuckle out me ^^ ; @@Aramonde, Yes. I never watch TV, I don't have an internet connection in Munich, I don't own a smartphone, I only listen to the radio at work and they still charge me ~50 euro every three months. They should just call it a tax and not a fee and be done with it. Semantics.

Editing … Yeah, that's why I said can't watch it not can't use it :P It's stupid really because it only covers the BBC channels but you're not allowed to watch other channels either. They should just tell the BBC to get their own income like everybody else and save a lot of money chasing licence dodgers and taking them to court.

Editing … It's a throwback to when the BBC was the only channel so if you had a TV that's what you'd end up watching. All the same, I like the BBC myself and without the license fee it'd probably have adverts and still drop in quality.

Editing … I only care about adverts when it's something like the World Cup Final and it's showing on ITV too, I always watch the BBC coverage because it doesn't have them. If it was only on ITV I wouldn't care. Personally, I'd rather have more money in my bank and watch ads.

Editing … The (new) German system really is a bit demented, they're going by the logic that POTENTIALLY every household can access TV and radio via internet etc, so best thing to do is simply charge every household, whereas in the past they did the same as UK TV licensing (ie. send threatening letters and hope people own up to having a TV/radio). It's effectively a new form of tax.

Editing … @Michael Z, agree as it is cheeky and annoying. I remember during my apprenticeship anyone (repeat anyone) got a letter from GEZ, (despite GEZ were already aware that everyone! there was rid to pay it due low income), they "demanded" their money. Many paid due lack of knowledge the whole time (2-3 years). Since then GEZ (i know they changed their name already) means just "devil" itself to me!

Editing … I'd rather have commercials during my shows then have to pay a tax like that. Hell with DVR no one watches commercials anymore they just fast forward through them. I think in 20 years TV will be a dead medium. With Youtube, Netflix, Hulu and the like it is already happening. Most young people in America hardly watch TV anymore (like me :D).

Editing … We also have private channels in Germany that show loads of adverts but everybody hates them for it (but probably no more or less than they already hate GEZ though). Thing is, they're the channels who can afford to screen the latest shows and movies from abroad, so swings and roundabouts. Regarding Youtube etc, it's only a question of time until they totally bombard us with ads, after all Youtube have already started doing it. Not to mention geoblocking and all the other crap that actually negates the whole point of the internet in my opinion. I'm probably being overly pessimistic though.
