If you substitute the "i" in "Hill" with an "e" you get "Silent Hell", which at least to me is what this franchise is all about: the mental hardships each protagonist is going through in their lives.

By facing their own past, talking about it (shattered memories) and or visiting this town which holds a special place in their hearts (silent hill 2), they overcome their inner silent hell so to speak.

The whole series is basically one long therapy session, all of the monsters in this town are mere metaphors, nothing more than delusions of the mind.
