I can't believe I totally forgot the PS3 could output component and play PS1 discs with smoothing. Been jumping through hoops trying to get things on my CRT and it was right there all along.

On a related note I recently got another wii for cheap but when I got it home I saw it had no gamcube ports..... Why? That's the stupidest thing you could do. It looks like the regular wii as well so it's easy to be fooled.

Editing … Yea, I played Resident Evil Director's Cut on the PS5 which had some smoothing. Then I put up RE2 on an emulator and it looked like garbage cause my hardware tanks anytime I try to use shaders and such...so then I thought oh I have a PSOne Classic version of RE2 on my PS3 but that also look like crap on the QLED. So then I just bought the PS1 game off Ebay to play it on the CRT via original PS1. Which I'm currently doing... but I could've just played the PSOne classic on the PS3 on the CRT which looks great. One day I hope to have all my systems setup and ready to play....but currently I do a lot of swapping.

I think the crt has an n64, snes and nes hooked up right now. I played vagrant story on my flat-screen and it was pretty ugly compared to the way it looks on crt but I was too lazy to roll over the fat tv so I just let the game be ugly. Still very pretty game at the core. I refuse to finish earthbound on anything else than my crt though. I want the game to fry my eyes. That's the only authentic experience.

Editing … That listing is confused, it's got the text about the MSX release but the video is of the NES version. Both games are quite different. The maps aren't the same, sprites are different, music is different, text is different, the metal gear doesn't even appear in the NES version. Some similarities but the NES version is much messier.

I've been replaying a lot of my old favorites lately.... I think my lists are gonna shake up a lot. Metal Gear Solid my longstanding #1 might even fall off the list completely. I didn't hate it or anything. I understand why I loved it and it's influence on the industry but I don't think I'd say it's a favorite of mine anymore. It's got pretty janky controls and a bloated story. And honestly plays very much like a boss rush, every five seconds your jumping to the next boss battle. I just played the first two Metal Gear games as well and enjoyed my time with those much more. They have pretty much everything solid has without the story bloat.

Editing … MGS isn't MGS without a bloated story, as evidenced by MGSV. Since you liked OG Metal Gear have you played UnMetal? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ppYv7SPT_4 I've considered checking it out but some aspects of it put me off. And I've always wanted to check out the Game Boy Color MGS.

Editing … MGS1 is certainly janky and kind of hard to look at, but in a way that few stealth games in the subsequent decades have been, it makes ghosting the ideal way to progress. No tranq gun, no first-person precision shooting, and most importantly, the second you're spotted the alarm goes off. None of the nonsense with the guard scooting around the corner to radio for help. You get spotted, you'd best GTFO pronto. It can be frustrating how easily you clip through a guard while trying to break his neck, but I must say it brought a whole lot of tension to the experience that I've rarely experienced in more recent stealth games. On higher difficulties there's even a proto-Dark Souls appeal. I would sometimes try to back-track to stock up on rations for a boss fight only to lose more health along the way. Not my favorite game, or even my favorite in the series, but I wish these aspects of game design hadn't been all but abandoned.

Editing … In terms of bloat, what I'm trying to say is that the story was expanded in the wrong places. A lot of boring back story to some of the bosses. And possibly because I remember the map so well from childhood. It felt like I was just jumping from boss battle to boss battle. Barely even playing a game. The visuals didn't bother me, they're pretty great graphics for a PS1 game. But the controls did kind of bother me. Because I didn't feel as though I had a good grasp on my movement or combat. Like I'm ok with jank if it's consistent. Last year I played through all the Syphon Filters and recently I did Resident Evil Director's Cut and was fine with those because even though their control schemes are a bit rough. I was able to get a consistent result.

Editing … UnMetal was good but a bit too linear and jokey for my tastes. If anything I'd say I was disappointed that all the tools were there to make a great Metal Gear like game but then he made a parody game instead. It's a bummer though that the guy before he made UnMetal he made a MSX homebrew game called Prisoner of War which is essentially UnMetal without all the jokiness. I want to play that but as far as I can tell you need to buy the MSX cart and og hardware to play it. The market just does not have any Metal Gear like games from my searching other than UnMetal.

Editing … Metal Gear Solid (GBC)... while impressive for the hardware. I really wanted it to end. It was so long and god there's a lot of unnecessary text. And coming off playing original Metal Gears, the level design leaves a lot to be desired. You never get that same rewarding feeling you get for exploring in the originals.

I'm tired of whiny teenagers in my video games. The story and dialogue of Spiderman 2 is just awful. None of the emotional beats hit they way they want them too... They keep forcing me to do missions where I'm not a dope Spiderman kicking ass. Riding rides at the amusement park was....awful. It amazes me that this game is getting overwhelmingly positive reviews. The combat itself is fun to combo but isn't changed all that much from the first two in the series... And I'm playing on the hardest difficulty and rarely die. The city itself feels lifeless. My nephew played a little and we stumbled on a group of cops knocking on a door and he stopped and watched expecting something to happen but nothing did for like ten minutes... Just a cop repeatedly knocking on a door. We looked at a squirrel that was just jumping on and off a tree trunk... Like I get it, it's a video game but for an open world in this day and age .. it's just so blatantly lazy. Don't look at the bookshelves for too long or you'll notice that there's the same 20 or so books on every bookshelf in the game. Sometimes like a dozen copies of the same book. And I mean I get it if you just have generic leather book models repeated but these are titled books or a thick bright green book with a pen on the spine? I don't even understand that model... this game could be so much better if more time was spent on polishing the world rather than expanding it.

I really enjoyed this one. Well executed story game with good art and dialogue. My only gripe is it drags at some points and near the end some sections turn into trial and error recursive loops. Not to say the game shouldn't be difficult at points but if I have to redo a section just because I didn't know the upcoming pattern it starts to get frustrating and then you get pulled out of the story. For this type of a game I see that as a detriment.

Cool art style and some interesting design choices. Once you figure out the looting and weapon system it's pretty easy to cheese your way through most battles. The characters and dialogue kept me interested enough to work my way through to the end but not interested enough to seek out all the extra content.
