Is Ocarina of Time the best game ever? No. But bear with me here. In 2004 I was still playing SNES games. I was poor and we only had a NES (a bootleg called Polystation), a Game Boy Color and SNES to play. I knew about PlayStation, but I didn't care much because the graphics were ugly (my 12 yo self thought so). The same year we got a PC (again, I was poor) and I discovered the world of emulators. I've played pretty much every 2D platformer available on the SNES through emulation. One day I decided to upgrade my emulators because I was tired of Super Mario World, so I downloaded both a PS1 and a N64 emulator. I couldn't play PS1 because I didn't have money to buy the discs and the 700 MB per game was impossible for my internet connection. Nintendo 64 on the other hand was easy, most games were under 60 MB. So I discovered Super Mario 64, and I didn't like it. It was difficult to understand what to do, no more "go to the right". Then I decided to download some other familiar faces, like Donkey Kong and Zelda. Zelda took me by surprise and made me feel like gaming had finally reached a whole new level. It had story, cutscenes, extremely good graphics (I wasn't aware of Half-Life 2 or Far Cry in 2004) and a near perfect gameplay. Maybe I'm blinded by nostalgia of those days when gaming was a fun activity, but I never had such experience playing any other game in my entire life. 2 years later my dad got me a real Nintendo 64, then a Nintendo DS in 2008, then a Wii in 2009, then a PS3 in 2010 and the rest is history.

Editing … There's no reason to be ashamed being a late adopter. I, too, got a PS3 in 2010 and a DS as late as 2013. Side note: I always enjoy these kinds of posts, where people talk about the games and systems they grew up with :)

Editing … That's my favourite thing about gaming. The best games are almost invariably linked with strong memories, and it's good to hear peoples stories about how and why they came to play these games :)
