The last time I played this was in high-school. Picked up the PS4 port and so far so good. Hasn't aged as bad as I was expecting, the only major sore is that the backgrounds are very blurry and smudged; they just weren't made to render at modern resolutions. The PS4 version has some quality of life features (or cheats as rukk would have them): you can speed the game up x3, turn off random battles, and instantly heal your party and get unlimited Limit Break gauge. You just click the joysticks for each one, so you don't have to use all of them.

Hell, chess is turn-based and people still play that thousand year old insanity. I'm really worried it's gonna be more like FFXIII than Crisis Core!

Seriously, I love turn-based combat as much as the next guy, but do you really want this remake to be exactly the same game as the original? That would be boring and pointless.

You've played it to death, and enjoyed every single piece of content it has to offer...NOW you get to experience the same story, same characters and same world in a different perspective. Making it feel fresh and new again. This is a WIN-WIN scenario for me, honestly.

Editing … Yeah, the terms Remake and Remaster don't seem to have definitive definitions. Look at Duck Tales Remastered, it's vastly different from a presentation standpoint, with a new artstyle, added voice acting and cutscenes, but at the end of the day the gameplay is the exact same...and it's called a remaster. That's why I think that RE1 "remake" is actually a "remaster". But hey who knows, I like to think of the issue this way - why remake a game, if you're gonna leave it exactly as it is?

Editing … For the novelty of it I suppose. I mean, I just see remakes as kind of a novelty anyway. You could also ask, if you're going to change a ton of stuff, why make it a remake instead of a new game? I guess a lot of people were asking for a FFVII remake, but I'm not sure they know why they were asking for it. Personally, the idea of one of the best games out nowadays having turn based menus and shit is kind of charming to me. I always liked the idea of Final Fantasy I being completely remade and looking amazing but having no changes to the gameplay just to make people go WTF was the point of this!? Anyway, the new FFVII might turn out good, but no matter how much they keep the same I don't think it could possibly feel like FFVII. That game only could have happened in 1997. Even games coming out in 1998 looked completely different.

Editing … Well, one point would be giving the otherwise same experience to people who can't stand ps1 graphics, but I would imagine that people who can't stand late 90s graphics also can't stand late 90s RPG gameplay. I like how the first two Harry Potter movies were basically just carbon copies of the books and gave people who don't read essentially the same experience, but the later movies are generally considered better movies, so I dunno what to think. There's probably no RIGHT way to do a remake. There's no way NeoFFVII will please everyone. I just hope that it's not a total bomb and pleases a decent percentage of people.

Editing … I get the whole thing of "we're the fans, we're the ones buying the games, we should get what we want", but I feel most people who stand by that use that excuse way too much. To the point i'd call them self-entitled and spoiled. When you buy a game, you're getting something made by someone else. You should know what you're getting yourself into, not expecting the people creating it to do it exactly like you want. Don't want it? Don't buy it. If everyone operates on the basis of pleasing the customer, then it's not art - it's a business. And yeah, I guess everything is a business, but you don't see filmmakers making films exactly how people want them to, or writters writting books like their fans ask to. I find this whole notion fucking ridiculous...

If it turns out to be a great game in its own right separate from the original that'd be cool. I just find it hard to imagine. Crisis Core is a game I really like for reasons entirely different from FFVII, but it's not a remake. It's a game with fanservice, and some people feel that fanservice is the reason to play it and the gameplay's not very good. But I like it for the gameplay more than for its connections to FFVII. You never know I guess.

With XIII they still used the ATB, they just watered it down so you ended up with a weak turn-based game wearing action game pants. If you watch the gameplay footage for VII Remake it looks like a similar system might be used again, which is what worries me.
