Editing … Aww, it is absolutely cringe-worthy, but I loved the battle system and the dressphere mechanic. The Last Mission version even added a monster-capture system that was the precursor to XIII-2

Editing … The beginning of X-2 is the worst thing in the history of history. I really liked the rest of Chapter 1. Then Chapter 2 bored me and I stopped playing. I have not played Revenant Wings at all; I'm not sure it's a genre I like. Dissidia managed to feel confusing and repetitive at the same time, which shouldn't be possible.

Editing … I've always liked turn based JRPG gameplay. Also, is there a gaming genre more focused on story than RPGs? I suppose visual novels and dating sims, but those don't get much focus in the west.

Editing … Theres nothing wrong with turn-based RPG's. What you are referring to is random encounters, and I don't think anyone in the history of the word has enjoyed those. Random encounters can suck a duck

Editing … "and I don't think anyone in the history of the word has enjoyed those" 1. Tons of people have played RPGs with random encounters. 2. There are people out there who like it when women tie them up and hurt them. I think you might wanna re-think that statement. ;) Personally, I can like random encounters, but it's situational. I have to feel like I'm getting something worthwhile that I need out of the battles. If the game is too easy, and I feel like the exp I'm getting is making the game even more overly easy, then I'm not going to be enjoying the battles. If the boss I'm stuck on is really hard, but the random battles are super easy and barely giving me any exp, then I'm not going to be enjoying the random battles.

Editing … I can tolerate random encounters so long as the games dungeons are relatively straight-forward, but in games where there is a puzzle element to getting through stages, I'd say random encounters are a big no-no. Nothing worse than having to do legwork for a puzzle while getting interrupted every 4 steps to fight a battle. I much prefer games that keep the turn-based battle system but also display the enemies on the field i.e Persona 3/4, Trails in the Sky, Chrono Trigger. But sadly these games are few in number. This allows you to pick and choose the pace of your levelling instead of forced grinding. P.S I also hate that games give you a run option for battles but it rarely ever works :/

Editing … To me whether or not the enemies are on the field doesn't make a huge difference. Persona 3 and Chrono Trigger would be pretty much the same game to me. I might actually like Persona 4 a little more with random battles, since after I clear a floor of enemies, the run to the staircase is really long and boring. I can see it being nice being allowed to avoid enemies, but if I'm dodging enemies left and right, the game is probably too easy. Simply put, for random battles to work, the game has to make you want to get into battles. I agree with SG about puzzles. That's part of why I wasn't big on Golden Sun. Puzzles plus random battles is a no no. That game was already kinda easy, and then I got overleveled running around trying to figure out the puzzles. And then someone told me they didn't have any trouble on any of the puzzles and I felt like an idiot and stopped playing. The list of games where I like puzzles is quite short.
