There are 3 manufacturers of HDDs left: Seagate, Toshiba, and Western Digital. All other brands use one of these three.
I would avoid any 3.5" drives (they run hot), so that probably means no 3TB or 4TB.
I would avoid any Western Digital branded external drives since the USB ports are soldered directly onto the drives themselves, which means that if the USB port craps out, the drive is useless. Both other brands with WD drives inside might be okay.
