I haven't played nearly enough to rate it, but so far this game is a disappointment. I like how the stealth works, and the story so far is intriguing, albeit sometimes the cutscenes can drag at times (I'm ok with this since Hideo Kojima put a lot of effort into the characterization), but Metal Gear Solid has some of the worst controls I've used in ANY video game I've ever played. The camera can't be adjusted, and the aiming system for the guns is pretty much designed to get you killed (as though Konami couldn't make the enemies actually dangerous and instead had to make Snake play like a cripple to encourage you to use stealth). It's one thing to die because you legitimately screwed up; it's another to die constantly because you can't properly aim a friggin pistol. This game was made in 1998; it's not like there was no feasible way to make the enemies challenging but still have a good aiming system. I'm shocked that, from what I hear, this is also true with the sequels.

Editing … MGS 4, ground Zeroes and Peace Walker are the only entries in the series that have decent to good gameplay. If you priotise controls over presentation, then the Splinter Cell franchise might be more up your alley. Imho Splinter Cell 1-3 > MGS 1-3

Editing … Thanks. Also I think MGS3 isn't that bad if you play Subsistence, from what I hear, since it has a 3rd person camera. I'm just a bit baffled as to why every review here gives MGS a 9 or a 10, and half of them even say it was good at the time, as though that automatically means it will stand up today. Games can tell great stories because they are interactive, but when there's a glitch in the interactivity (ie crap control), the story goes down the toilet. Snake's supposed to be the best soldier on the planet, for crying out loud, yet he can't even shoot a gun!

Editing … I dunno if it was the case in the original MGS for PS1, but in MGS: Integral for PC, if you aim in the enemy's general direction and hold the button down, Snake will auto-correct your aim for you (he'll also wait for you to release the button if you're using the pistol).
