Hopefully I just need to get into it but going by first impressions I don't like this nearly as the Souls games. Stylistically it's pretty awesome but the gameplay's just not clicking with me.

Editing … There's a few ways of playing it depending on what weapon you chose. If you went Saw Cleaver (really recommended) use your R1 > L1 combo a lot; it does a hidden 'heavy damage' which pushes back most enemies. The saw weapons also have a hidden 25% damage bonus against beasts! You can buy all the starting weapons once you find a Saw Hunters Badge, so no need to restart either.

Editing … But seriously, I prefer the Souls games as well. But the combat in this one is undeniably better. Instead of adding multiple styles of play and enourmous amounts of weapons and stuff, it adds a rather limited number of strategies and weapon choices and develops them to it's max potential. The level of strategy inside the little option you have, in comparison to the Souls series, is mindblowing. It's one of the tightest battle systems i've ever seen, and it's also way faster and more responsive.

Editing … I really don't get what you hate about Dark Souls 2. I agree it's not as good as Dark Souls 1 because it lacks the intricate intertwining level design that game has, you have to fast travel and go through a couple of loading screens whenever you want to level up and the declining max health after each death discourages exploration. It's still a very good game with the same gameplay that made the original great though.

Editing … As for Bloodborne right now I'm annoyed how weak the guns are (short range I was fine with but they're weak too) which is making me miss shields and my first impression is that I like the fast paced, slightly manic combat where you sometimes end up playing crowd control with weaker enemies less than the Souls series where you had loads of playstyles and weaponry to think about and every enemy and every hit you take matters. Other than that it's annoying that they've repeated DS2's flaw of having to go through two loading screens whenever you want to level up and that now it's worse because you can't use lanterns as a checkpoint/to restore your health/reset enemies unless you pointlessly go to the Hunter's Dream and back. Also what's the point of blocking you from levelling up unless you have at least one of the insight consumable you have to spend to play co-op? It's also bugging me that they only let you carry 10 molotov cocktails, using them all on a boss and then dying and either having to grind a little to buy 10 more or beat the boss without them's really annoying, you should be able to stock up.

Editing … Yeah, there are some weak design decisions regarding inventory imo. You can stock up to 99 molotovs: in the Hunter's Dream there's a storage box; it won't automatically refill you like Blood Vials though, which makes it a chore. Making guns low damage is arbitrary I know, but it would make the game an absolute bore-fest otherwise since the AI is pretty limited. Think of guns as a shield that can only parry, they are a high-risk but high-reward tool. You can make gun builds that do very high damage, they are a mid-to-late game thing though and I don't want to spoil the game for you; focus on melee for a first run.

Editing … Also, I wouldn't bother with Chalice Dungeons on your first run (unless they really interest you of course). They lack the level design, reward, and pacing of the main game; they are more interesting for low level runs or NG+ imo.
