There's a massive RPG bias here. Very few non-RPGs make it into the top 40 and those that do often have RPG elements. 15 RPGs in the top 40, and a further 7 by my count with RPG elements. Compared to any other genre that's massive.

Platformers (both 2D and 3D) only have 2 games in the top 40, both Mario games because nostalgic fanboys can't deviate from the socially sanctioned opinion of the internet... but yeah, the biggest franchises of the 8-bit right through to PS2, from 'Mega Man' to 'Ratchet & Clank' and everything in between has almost no representation even if we extend it to a top 100.

First Person Shooters don't do much better. If we count both 'Portal' games, and 'Fallout 3' and 'Fallout: New Vegas' there's 7, but let's face it, they're really puzzle and RPG respectively. So, 3. Arguably the biggest genre in gaming and there's only 3 in the top 40 and they're ALL single-player games.

Open World Sandbox also has 3, which is probably the biggest modern franchise (soon to overtake FPS I'd say looking at the trends). Even then only one of them, 'Red Dead Redemption' makes it into the top 30.

I must admit I do find it interesting looking at this list and looking at the trends in the list. I do wonder what this says about the community and it's members (though dead accounts skews everything too much to make any really statements).

Editing … This is a nerd site. RPGs have been disproportionately popular in nerd circles since basically forever. Check out some of Nintendo Power’s NES and SNES popularity charts from back in the day. And that was back before FFVII, when the majority of serious (western) gamers had still probably never played an RPG. And Mario having the most popular platformers isn’t because “nostalgic fanboys can't deviate from the socially sanctioned opinion of the internet.” It’s the consensus among nerds, casual gamers, and critics alike, online or offline, and the only franchises that ever seriously challenged that are Sonic and (kind-of sort-of) Crash Bandicoot. If anything Mario is probably weaker here than I’d have expected it to be. As to why other platformers aren’t on the list? “Too many games in too little time with too few changes” happened in pretty much every big platformer series and likely hurt the games’ individual notability. Also the market relevance of the genre fell off a cliff in the early 2000’s that it never really recovered from.

Editing … I know Nintendo fans dislike this, but I call out the masses on rating 'Super Mario World' and 'Super Mario 64' out of nostalgia precisely because they don't rate any others. It may well be the consensus, but considering this site is supposed to be for the enthusiast; well I expect better. Is 'Call Of Duty' the top rated FPS? No. Is 'GTA5' The top rated Sandbox? No. The common consensus is ignorant drawing on what's popular not what's actually worthwhile (even if it's on occasion the same thing). There are plenty of platformers that have improved on the Mario formula both in 2D and 3D, from 'Ratchet & Clank Future', to 'Shovel Knight', to 'Vexx' and everything in between. Hell, even within the Mario franchise there's 'New Super Mario Bros. U', 'Super Mario 3D World', and 'Super Mario Galaxy 2'; all massive improvements on what came before them. The fact is, many people rate the likes of 'Super Mario 64' and the big one, 'Ocarina Of Time' out of peer pressure. It's sad but true. I've watched countless YouTube top ten lists where the video maker expects to be flamed because certain games aren't rated high enough, with constant disclaimers that "this is MY list not yours", and pleas to the viewer to not flip out because their favourite game made #6 on a list instead of the top 3... The day this stops being true, the day I start believing half these rating.
