Shenmue isn't perfect. Far from it. The fighting system is sloppy, the game grinds to a complete halt on Disc 2 and the voice acting ranges from hammy to wooden but I think these problems make me love it even more. These imperfections are obvious but they add to the game's charm. But enough of that. The game's positives deserve some mention. The story is a classic revenge story that is told in parts. Shenmue chronicles the first chapter in a 11 (or was it 16) chapter epic. The characters are memorable and feel real-ish (Certainly real for a game from 2000). The overworld is incredibly detailed and beautiful. I don't like to use the term "immersive" too much but Shenmue is immersive. Doubita feels real. Capsule toys, arcade games and pointless alleyways all add to the immersion. Couple that in with some great weather effects and you've got a game that legitimately feels like a real place.
