This may bring some debate, but I'm the only one who think we should be able to add some fictional characters too? I mean, sometimes it's those fictional characters attitudes and way of life that inspire us. Sure, we can put the author of the works they're in, but it's not the same thing.

Editing … I suppose if I were to play devil's advocate for a moment, I would argue that a fictional character isn't technically a person.

Editing … Not a real person, no. But I think that's beside the point

Editing … I find fictional characters inspiring too sometimes but it's a definite no in my book. The writer deciding that this imaginary character did something inspiring shouldn't be compared to massive achievements or selflessness or bravery or hardship in the real world where it happens despite the odds, the risks and the opposition that real people have to face.

Editing … I think what matters here is how it inspires YOU. Inspiring things don't even have to be risky things that go against the odds. It may just be a way of seeing the world.

Editing … I think whether or not it is beside the point depends on the intent of the list: is the inspiration aspect of the list the most important, or is the focus to specify physical people that inspire? I could see another list being made including favorite inspirations, whether it be persons or movements or fictional characters. Or boobs.

Editing … For me, this list's about giving people that inspired me the credit they deserve. It doesn't matter if we're talking explorers, leaders and war heroes or artists, writers and philosophers their achievements and that they were inspiring still means a lot more if they're real.

Editing … I just think it's totally incomparable for a fictional character to do something inspiring and for a real person to do something inspiring. We already have a favourite characters list and I don't want this turning into a second one.

Editing … In the long run you could probably ask for a favourite inspirational characters list :) I wouldn't mind making one myself, I just really don't think they should be mixed in with real inspirational people.

Editing … I see both sides here and I also get a lot of inspiration from fictional characters sometimes. I'm not fussed either way, I'd be happy to add fictional characters to a list if that was what was decided.

Editing … The beauty of this site is that as users we can make the lists we want to see as opposed to other sites that may have predefined lists that we have no say in. If we want to rank inspirational physical people, we can do that here. If we want to make a list of inspirational fictional characters, we can do that too. We can probably even make a list of inspirational figures including both areas.
