What makes MGS1 my favorite in the series is unclear. Maybe because each game got closer to a more human, aesthetic pace, while MGS1 felt more unreal and action-packed. Something like that.

Concerning the selfish gene and renegade terrorism, story is of course no small part of the ride. But along with it there's plenty of third-and-first-person shooting, innovative stealth, and action of all kinds mixed together just right. Though it never gets too over the top or leans more toward one aspect than others, it also doesn't get dull or drag along in any part too much. Famous for popularizing stealth action and commonly being considered the best title on PlayStation, it's hard to turn down the original Metal Gear Solid.
